Veeam Backup for O365 keeps your data protected how you choose!
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
We use Veeam Backup for Office 365 to backup specific Exchange online mailboxes, as well as a few OneDrive clients and Teams groups. It allows us to address a major concern with Office 365, and that's being in control of our data. With O365, you often don't know where your data is stored and if there's an issue, how you will recover from it. With Backup for O365, we're in charge of making sure our data is protected.
Pros
- Backups of Exchange online mailboxes.
- Backups of SharePoint online sites.
Cons
- Teams groups are difficult to restore.
- SharePoint Explorer doesn't have the ability to only restore security on a site.
- This product comes with 10 free licenses, so there's absolutely no negative value from just trying it out!
After watching several presentations about "why we need to backup our O365 data" and seeing various news reports about data breaches or lost data in O365, it became clear that this was something we needed to consider. We often assume that since it's already in the cloud, Microsoft will just handle it, but that's not really the case. Microsoft handles certain aspects, but if a user accidentally deletes something, they won't do anything about it. Once we started to utilize Microsoft Teams heavily, we decided to move forward with Veeam because more and more data was starting to be stored in the cloud.
So far, we haven't had this issue come up (fortunately, knock on wood). However, in our testing, we have been able to successfully recover Teams data, as well as all Mailbox, OneDrive, and SharePoint data that we tested with.
These options are great because they offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to restoring. Sometimes you don't want to just write over the existing object, or sometimes you need to give the data to a specific user. Especially when it comes to restoring mailboxes, being able to restore it as a PST is very helpful because you can give the data to other users if necessary.
My favorite features are being able to use existing repositories in my Veeam environment and being able to choose exactly where I store my data. I can store it locally, or I can offload it to the cloud of my choosing, allowing for even more redundancy and being able to follow Veeam's recommended 3-2-1 rule.
Veeam gave us the most flexibility at the lowest cost. It was also the easiest to use and easiest to restore from. AvePoint had some nice features, but ultimately it was frustrating and difficult to setup. Druva was convenient and very easy, however it's expensive and only allows you to backup to their AWS instances.
