Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
We use Veeam to both backup and replicate our VMs. We backup to several local and air-gapped targets, and replicate VMs to our DR site. It is used across our whole organization. For us, it addresses both data backup and disaster recovery. We also use Veeam to backup our O365 data and some physical workstations.
Pros
- Veeam makes efficient use of available backup space.
- Veeam now scales out available backup storage.
- Veeam can be very easy to set up and it allows you to also be very granular/specific in your setup.
- Data recovery is easy.
Cons
- First line support is not that great, in my opinion.
- Support can come across as being arrogant.
- Upgrade instructions are not always very clear.
- Cost-effective data backup.
- Cost-effective DR solution.
- Faster than many other backup products.
We are only now beginning to explore the backup to cloud platforms aspect of Veeam. Until just recently, we utilized Veeam all locally or to our DR site. We also rotated several large USB hard drives onsite/offsite as an extra level of confidence. We have begun to use the cloud backup aspect, and are still learning and tweaking our setup.
We do not currently use tools such as instant recovery as we've been limited by hardware constraints. We have upgraded to a new Veeam server just recently, so we may be able to explore those features in the near future. We do utilize the options in the jobs to ensure the backup file integrity.
At the time we started using Veeam, there was only one other applicable competitor, and I cannot remember the name of it anymore. I think it was Qwest or something like that. We also concurrently run ArcServe and ShadowProtect. Veeam now has features available so that we can deprecate and quit using the other products. Veeam is easier to configure and operate versus the other products we use.
