Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We currently have two main use cases for Veeam, backup and replication of primary VMs and virtual-to-virtual migrations to and from remote sites. Veeam was one of the first solutions to offer quick recovery options and its mechanism to perform continuous backups to a remote cluster make it ideal for migrations, even for sites that do not have a lot of bandwidth.
  • Ideal Backup and Recovery solution for VMs.
  • Quick recovery options allow for a quick checkup of viability of backups.
  • Continuous replication options on a schedule to a remote site.
  • Powershell automation options are excellent to orchestrate backups and recoveries.
  • VM only. No options to backup and recovery anything outside of a x86 VM.
  • Some interface options are a bit clunky.
  • It has simplified many of the workflows on migration and backup verification.
  • It continues to be a leader on backup/recovery for x86 VMs.
  • It has a strong feature set and it has allowed us to maintain a lean team managing its different aspects.
We have about 25-30 systems being backed up at the moment, but we've had as much as 400 in the past year. It has performed beyond our expectation and it has worked flawlessly on every migration and job we've performed.
We have not used this feature currently, but allowing us to have multiple targets has made it easy to manage the product and move backups to lower cost storage as needs dictate (within our datacenters).
These features give us an additional peace of mind when testing our backups, especially before major disaster recovery or migration exercises. By allowing us to perform verification of the backups, it gives us an additional check-in steps to make sure these exercises will work without issues.
Veeam is a superior solution for VM Backups to any other tools I've used. The other solutions have more breadth, but Veeam is laser-focused on operating on the x86 virtualization space. Their head start has allowed them to continue to innovate on this space and bring new features to the table. While the other solutions are more "complete" they lack things that we've become used to in the Veeam product.
It is the best solution for backups, recoveries and migrations of x86 VMs. It has a full feature set for these types of backups and a slew of features that make it a nifty solution to work with. In many cases, Veeam implemented many of these features first and it should be considered if your environment is x86 VM-only.

It is less appropriate for any other type of backups (any type of non x86 systems, such as SPARC Solaris, AIX, Linux on Power). You will need to look for a different solution to work for these types of systems. It strives to be best in class at what it does and doesn't try to be a jack-of-all-trades.
