Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We use Veeam B&R to backup our clients locally and offsite a copy of their backups to a DR location. The expectation is that most restores are done locally, however there is another copy air gapped offsite that can be brought up if there is a bigger problem on site (like a fire or a flood).
  • Veeam uses a lot less disk space if you are on Server 2016+ using REFS.
  • Veeam is easy to hire for as it has widespread use in the market.
  • Veeam is a stable product.
  • Veeam can be scaled up to any size data centre.
  • Veeam B&R uses an incredible amount of disk space if you are using NTFS on the backup destination.
  • Veeam has a bit of learning curve.
  • Veeam is affordable.
  • Veeam scales really well so you don't need to worry about multiple backup products.
  • Veeam makes standardization fairly easy and has integrations into all of our management products.
We are backing up about a hundred machines with Veeam. We expected to be backing up over 600 machines by now, however we cannot use Veeam on server 2012 with NTFS in place as it uses WAY more disk space than shadowprotect or other backup platforms. We did not know this coming into it.
We are backing up to a local disk based system, then offsite to our cloudconnect data centre. This works quite well. If clients have other requirements, you can choose a different cloudconnect partner that maybe meets more stringent security requirements.
You cannot replicate to a cloudconnect server, then to another cloudconnect server. You can only replicate or backup offsite once.
We use the SureBackup feature to turn on the backups and ensure we can use them for DR purposes. This lets us only require one set of backups for both backup and DR.
Datto is the easiest, but it's quite expensive.
Shadowprotect used to be good, but SPX isn't very good at all.
Unitrends we had nothing but problems with.
Veeam is the standard for MSP's if you want to roll your own. It will take more management than a Datto solution, but I could not justify the costs of Datto vs. Veeam
If you have a backup server with Server 2016+ and ReFS, then Veeam works very, very well and will save you a ton of disk space. Backups are smooth and offsites work well either to our own datacentre or to a third party CloudConnect partner.
We found many of our staff already had experience with Veeam so training was relatively easy.
