Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We use Veeam Backup & Replication in our data centers wherever we have virtual or physical workloads that need to be backed up on-site and off-site. It allows us to practice the 3-2-1 backup methodology. This allows us to guarantee to the organization that we are prepared in the event of a DR event.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Stability
  • Security
  • Reliability
  • Ease-of-Use
  • Exact replica of servers during the restore
  • Easier connection to AWS/Azure (automatic account creation and cost understanding)
  • Better backup of workstations
  • Deduplication improvements
We protect about 20 virtual servers within the organization that manage our e-mail systems, our ERP systems, and various LOB applications for departments across our organization. This is more than anticipated when we first acquired the product because the system was working so well at performing critical backups of the Infrastructure and the lack of issues allowed us to easily standardize on Veeam.
  • Cost of software is good.
  • It has saved us several days of downtime during a server crash.
  • We pay monthly for licensing for a vendor which includes Veeam Cloud Connect.
The organization was using an old tape backup system and sending those to a 3rd-party holding company. This was not ideal as the downtime to restore the critical servers could easily go from days to weeks and our SLA was not able to fully support that. Veeam has a much better offering than what we have used in the past from Symantec and the investment paid off itself after only one failure.
We use Veeam Cloud Connect (VCC) from a vendor that backs up all our critical data securely to an off-site data center helping us fulfill the 3-2-1 backup methodology. The ability for Veeam to remain optimized over the WAN makes VCC a great option to ensure data consistency and protection for the worst-case scenarios.
As an organization, this is one feature we do not have much experience with as we do not use a NAS or a File-Share backup. All of the data we are backing up with Veeam is structured data but I understand that this feature is very robust and works well.
Veeam Backup & Replication works best when using VMware virtual workloads as it was always designed for and works the best with virtual workloads. It also works best when you have an alternative storage medium and are not using a tape backup or legacy storage system to back up critical systems and workloads within the network and data center.
