Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

We use Veeam solely in our IT department to take care of our VM backups, VM replication, and VM restores. It is a great solution for keeping your VMs safe and ready in the result of data loss or bringing up a DR site. We replaced Commvault backup with Veeam.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Enterprise UNIX servers running Solaris & IBM AIX
  • Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • NAS filers
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Quick VM backups regardless of VM size
  • Fast restores and test restores
  • Data security and peace of mind
  • More cloud-based features
  • Advanced options easier to find
  • Interface could be a little clearer
We are doing about 90% of our workload and servers with Veeam. We started off with a small pool of critical VMs using Veeam but when we found it worked as good or better than the previous system we started moving it all over. Now we back up everything besides the physical servers with it.
  • Saved IT time doing backups
  • Reduced complexity of backups
  • Slightly cheaper than previous solution
We had been hearing about Veeam through partners and vendors and finally decided the feature set was expansive enough to use for our DR site replication. From there we started testing the other functions and found its backup tools were better than what we had previously. This pushed us into using it for our whole environment.
Cloud backups were not an option at first as our business requirements forced us to keep local backups only. Once we got the clearance to be able to move some backups to the cloud we experienced a much easier time with those backups. It makes it simple to be able to backup and restore anywhere you have an internet connection.
We have not yet pushed our network storage or file storage to Veeam but from what we've seen it looks to be a nice and easy solution. Windows file server is pretty basic, so when we decide to make the move it looks like Veeam NAS/file sharing has all the options we'd need.
Previous to Veeam Backup & Replication we were using Commvault for VM backups and it was slow and clunky. The interface was very hard to use and the layout caused info overload. Veeam makes it a lot easier to do simple things and does still have advanced options. Because of this, I'd recommend it for any organization doing VM backups with other tools.
