Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

VIP Technology Solutions Group is a managed service provider that offers outsourced IT to small and medium-sized businesses. Our customers rely on us to safely protect their data and one large part of that is backup, both onsite and offsite. We use Veeam to back up all customer data to an onsite NAS or server and then copy backups to our Veeam Cloud Connect repository in a secure datacenter offsite. Not only do we use Veeam for our customers but we also use it internally to back up all of our data both locally and remotely.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • NAS filers
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • License portability as your environment needs change
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Veeam does a very good job of backing up a large number of devices/VMs while spreading the load to not overwhelm any single server.
  • Veeam employees are very active in the forums so some smaller problems can be fixed without needing to open a formal ticket.
  • Very powerful automated backup testing and verification
  • Good reporting using Veeam One. They help find potential future issues before they are able to happen.
  • A lot of times, if there is an issue with a backup chain Veeam's tech support solution is to start a new one, meaning you've lost your data and are starting the chain over.
  • Backup incrementals are often much larger than most of the competition that I've worked with. An incremental on a rarely used server may be 1-2GBs with Veeam whereas it would only be ~100MB with another backup solution.
  • Built-in reporting is not very robust. To get good reports you have to install a separate Veeam One server.
Between our in-house servers and our customers, we are currently protecting about 150 mix of virtual and physical servers. With how easy it is to add and manage devices we are actually protecting more workloads than we originally planned for.
  • Veeam SureBackup has allowed us to save time by automating backup verification and testing. Veeam automatically creates a virtual machine and boots it from our backup data to verify that if we ever needed to do a full restore we would be able to. By automating this task it can save hundreds of hours that can be used on other tasks.
  • We have had to invest in more backup storage than originally planned because Veeams incremental backups are larger than expected and backup consolidation is not very robust.
We were looking for a solution that would easily let us manage onsite and offsite backups for our clients as well as ourselves. With Veeam Backup & Recovery as well as Veeam Cloud Connect, we were able to accomplish this without having to drastically increase our prices to those clients.
We utilize our own private cloud for storage repository and restores. Veem is able to backup Azure and AWS as well as restore virtual machines to those services that are normally hosted locally. Veeam is also able to backup Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365). We currently are not using the Azure/AWS capabilities at this time but may look at adding a capacity tier and offload data to Wasabi in the future.
We do not currently use the NAS fileshare backup functionality of Veeam at this time.
Veeam Backup & Recovery is a good solution in any environment where you have data that needs to be backed up. They have products that will cover very small non-profits all the way to giant Fortune 500 companies. Even if you are a cloud-only business, Veeam offers solutions that will back up Microsoft 365, Azure, and AWS.
If you are limited in your backup storage space, then Veeam may not be the best product for you. Work with Veeam or a third party to make sure that you are allocating an appropriate amount of storage space for your backups to accomplish your backup strategy(RPO/RTO).
