Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

One of the top products in the market for backup virtual environments. It also supports physical servers as well. We also use it for replication and so far it's working fine. It allows you to create effective disaster recovery plans, easy to manage and support is very responsive. Every organization must have multiple backups and Veeam is there for that.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Fast backup and recovery
  • Easy to manage
  • Flexible with OS, Hardware, Cloud
  • Great Support
  • Reasonable cost
  • It would be great if it can be installed on Linux or other OS. Right now only Windows.
  • Reporting can be better
We have over a hundred virtual machines, ten physical boxes, and in the cloud just a couple of servers. At the beginning when I joined the
team they managed around forty. Since then the company has been growing well by acquired a couple of companies and as result, we have added more servers.
Besides improving customer satisfaction, performance and security, we've increased the numbers of servers to support new software and servers as well.
  • Once it is set up, it runs well. IT department doesn't need to spend much time managing it.
  • Give more confidence on data recovery especially if you get database corrupted or systems get malware. Which can save you a hundred thousand or millions of dollars if lost.
  • Instant recovery allows you to quickly recover and back to business which can save big losses every hour and even customers.
Veeam Backup was already in place when I joined the company. However, I used Acronis Backup and Symantec Backup Exec in the past and both of them are very slow compared to Veeam in terms of backup and recovery. Failed rate for backup is much lower on Veeam. Management is easy and simple and most important that backup and recovery are become more reliable.
We are using cloud backup however cost could be very expensive by using Azure or AWS especially if you have a lot of data to keep. I think it would be better probably if we built our own cloud or used other local cloud services with proper security to make it more affordable. Today with a lot of security breaches, big names are more targeted by cybercriminals.
NAS storage is an excellent solution for keeping massive data for a low cost per TB. Veeam is well designed to work with share folders with different brands. You just need to make sure that you are encrypted all backup through Veaam jobs. Restoring to the good point is easy and fast even you need a single file.
If you have a corrupted or broken server you can run instantly from backup while it's recovering. It would be probably slow but it will be live almost instantly. Recovery SQL instance or AD object is much easier than many other solutions. Failover is working well if you setup everything correctly. It can't really do database live replication especially if the remote site is far away.
