Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365
My goal was to use it to back up our secondary M365 tenant. It doesn't get a lot of use and has never been backed up, like our primary tenant. Although the secondary tenant receives little traffic I still felt like it should be as protected as the primary so I looked to VDC as the solution.
Pros
- Comprehensive. Backs up all the M365 tenant data that I want to protect.
- Contemporary. It has all the features that I expect in a cloud service backup solution.
- Cost-effective: Has a decent price advantage over competitors without sacrificing value.
Cons
- Onboarding was terrible to the point of failure. It was presented as being easy but wound up being a miserable experience.
- The only real impact is from a compliance standpoint. Our company is expected at a regulatory level to be protecting our data and even though the tenant has little traffic there could still be some regulated data in there. We have to be able to tell an auditor that it's being backed up by an enterprise grade solution, and that's what VDC was intended for.
We were already backing up our primary tenant with a different solution, but it was one that I didn't like much. During our annual internal compliance audits the question of backups and DR always comes up and I wanted to make sure that the secondary tenant was protected before we reached a point where we were compelled to take an action. This was a proactive measure.
We haven't had to use it, and it's unlikely due to the low traffic and small number of mailboxes in our secondary tenant. It's not impossible that we'll need it some day but I expect that VDC is more a compliance checkbox so we can say "we took care of it" compared to how we have to protect our primary tenant.
We haven't had to restore anything other than regular test restores. I imagine that this flexibility (similar to the Veeam on prem backup solution) is nice to have when the time comes.
Top two features for me would be the ability to cover all the data we're concerned about across our M365 tenant without needing multiple solutions, and the ease of restores. If we ever needed to restore some (or all) of this tenant although it will probably be a bit slow it will not be a chore compared to other solutions I've used.
Datto has an old-fashioned interface that often makes restores more difficult, particularly it's lack of flexibility in searching and then selecting some or all of the data that is returned by the search. You'll find yourself clicking through multiple pages of returns with no way to display more hits on a single page.
