Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use it to back up servers at regular intervals and for on demand backups before performing upgrades to roll back from in the event of failure. We regularly test our backups and have had the "opportunity" to restore from backups numerous times and never had any failed recoveries. We've also run servers directly from their backup images and transitioned them, live, back to production.

- Software support is great; the few times we've ever needed them they've pulled through
- A change to the interface for mounting then recovering individual files or folders feels clunky but it's the only complaint about the software. It works, the process just isn't as smooth as I'd like.
- An inline product update from an update button rather than going to the Veeam page to download a new setup file would be pretty slick, not a deal breaker by any means though
- It would be pretty neat to have an inline tech support data upload, provide a ticket number and have the support upload go directly to Veeam rather than taking that archive file and uploading it to the ticket via the web portal

We're right around two dozen virtual servers now that Veeam protects for us and we didn't ever expect to have this many. New services have driven our virtual server count up from what we started at, we never envisioned Veeam would be helping us maintain so many servers and services.
- Protecting our customer's email has been a breeze with Veeam! It gives us peace of mind that the data is safe and easily accessible.
- Protecting (and restoring when things have gone south) our half dozen mission critical software for managing and monitoring our network
- We have a few physical endpoints we back up with Veeam and they're just as easy to restore or pull files from as needed as the virtual server backups are
We were bare metal until around 2013, backups and restoes to servers/services were painful and slow. We tried other virtualization backup software and weren't really happy. We made the swap to Veeam due to a suggestion from a friendly customer and haven't looked back since. Veeam has been able to meet and exceed all our backup expectations/needs.
Our group in particular does not use Veeam for cloud backup at this time but it is something that we have in our sights. We have a friendly entity that is using Veeam for immutable storage with a cloud provider and they are feeding us good vibes about the process.
We have not used this yet, it's something that we have looked at though.
Veeam, in our opinion, stands taller than Acronis in functionality. While they both have a very similar setup we found that Acronis just didn't perform backup or restore jobs as quickly as Veeam. The NAS storage options were configured the same for both software applications and Veeam simply outperformed Acronis in every area.

Using Veeam Data Platform
5 - Our IT/network management groups are the users/administrators for our Veeam.
5 - Supporting Veeam depends on your setup; remote NAS, cloud storage, where your servers are, etc. It's a simple or complicated as your virtual/physical server deployments are.

- It's been great for protecting our laptops, that wasn't something we had looked at doing in the beginning

Evaluating Veeam Data Platform and Competitors
Yes - Acronis. We replaced it with Veeam per a recommendation of a friendly entity and have never looked backup. They're similar in setup but Veeam performs better for us.

Overall performance, scheduling/maintaining backups, browsing the backups, restoring the backups and running backups live from NAS.
Nothing, Veeam was easy to evaluate, install and implement!

Change management was minimal - Knowing how much I/O you need for the number of concurrent backups you're making and then having enough overhead to maybe run a server from backup while making backups can go a long way.
- Network bottleneck was our biggest issue; we really needed a 10gb connection on our NAS
- Setting storage up properly - i.e. protocol support by NAS and what Veeam recommends you use
- Determining how much space our NAS needed and how many snapshots/backups we could host

We did not purchase premium support, the base level has been enough for us to date.
We had an issue where none of our virtual servers was backing up and it ended up being an issue with our VMware that the Veeam tech identified and was able to help us correct!
