Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam to backup all of our virtualized machines every night, as well as replicate our virtual machines to our other locations. It's very simple to setup, and once going, doesn't have to be touched. We received an email report every night of our backups and replications, if there were any issues and if we should take a deeper look into any individual virtual machines that are having trouble backing up. In the rare case that we have to restore files or a whole virtual machine from backup, it's not only very each to get this data back, but its fast as well.

Pros

  • Backups
  • Replication
  • Disaster Recovery
  • Ease of Use
  • Restoring of Data

Cons

  • Easier way to coordinate or schedule jobs at one location or among multiple. For example, If I'm running a backup at one location, and I have another job going at another location where I want to replicate to the first location, some sort of feature so VMWare is aware there's a backup going and it should wait.
  • Additional reports, such as monthly reports that shows how many restore points were created per VM and how many incremental points failed for a VM in a month.
  • A feature that gives a better overall view of all your restore points, what jobs they belong to, their age and where the data lives.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
Our workload is a virtualized VMWare environment and most virtual machines are backed up except for non critical servers. We backup, snapshot and replicate about 50 virtualized machines every day. This is line with our expectations when we first started using the product over a decade ago. At some point, we plan to move some of our workload to the cloud, which we feel comfortable with since we know Veeam is also able to serve our needs in that scenario.
  • The cost is very reasonable and for what we've spent on Veeam yearly, it has saved us at least 20 times that amount with the amount we'd have to spent to recover from a ransomware attack or similar disaster.
  • It's very easy to introduce new technicians we onboard to Veeam. With it's simple interface and ease of use, we can get a new tech accustomed to Veeam and restoring data within an hour.
  • With the speed of instant recovery, we can boot up a backed up or replicated VM within minutes, greatly reducing any downtime.
Before using Veeam, we used to use backup tapes. It was cumbersome and a huge time sink. We would constantly have to ship our backup tapes to an offsite warehouse that would secure and store these tapes for if we ever had to do a restore. If we did have to do a restore, we would have to wait hours to retrieve the tapes and load the data from them. It was a slow and frustrating experience. Veeam has made the process so much faster and simpler without the need of an offsite warehouse.
Our organization does not currently benefit from the cloud features, as we do not run or store any virtual machines in the cloud. It is on our roadmap to find cold storage to keep additional backups in the cloud, as well as run some VMs in Azure. Once that time comes, we feel comfortable that Veeam could meet that need.
Our organization has not had a need to do NAS/File-share backups.
Originally, our organization used to use Symantec Backup Exec which was very time consuming, confusing and cumbersome to for me and my staff to use. When taking over another company's infrastructure, they had used Carbonite to backup their physical servers. Again, the software was also cumbersome and needed constant attention as backups were constantly failing.

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

Veeam works great for managing backups and replication for virtualized environments. I have no experience using Veeam to backup physical machines. It is a great tool to make sure you meet your disaster recovery needs. If you have a location with your company fileserver that is down, if that data had been replicated to another location, you can easily spin up that fileserver at the other location within minutes.
