Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use it to backup our VMware virtualized server environment as well as a few physical servers. We also use it to back up a few Microsoft SQL Server instances. This product allows us to back up any Windows servers and Linux servers we have. This product allows us to not only have server and data backups but also allows us to develop a plan for disaster recovery.

Pros

  • It is flexible. You can use various storage devices and back up data on multiple platforms and any familiar hypervisor environment. It also works with any of the common cloud providers.
  • The licensing is easy to understand.
  • They offer a lot of documentation that answers most questions.

Cons

  • It can be hard to implement. There is a lot of documentation, but if you want to understand all the options that go into a backup job, it can be not easy to know what to choose.
  • The product involves various components to either make it work or to get visibility. These different components and pieces of software lead to a certain level of complexity.
  • It's not straightforward to implement least privilege on different accounts. For example, implementing least privilege on the account used to access VMware for doing backups and recovery is not an obvious answer. You have to go searching for it, but this is a pretty obvious thing that an IT person would want to know.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
About 40 workloads are protected by Veeam Data Platform across all of our virtual and physical workloads. This is the amount we anticipated based on our evaluation of our environment before purchasing the product. Thus, there were no surprises during or after implementation. Veeam sells licenses in packs of 10, so you have flexibility and don't need to know the precise number of workloads.
  • Since it is a more cost-effective backup solution than most that still meets our needs, it has freed up our budget for other purposes.
  • One negative impact is that it tends to be a little bit more hands-on than other products, but most of the time, it runs well.
  • Another negative impact is that you have to provide your own hardware for backup repositories, which is both beneficial and problematic.
We were seeking a more affordable backup solution as our budget lines were being reduced. Before Veeam Data Platform, we were able to spend less labor time working with our backup solution. Now, with Veeam Data Platform, we have to spend more labor time on our backup solution, but the money we save by switching to Veeam outweighs the increased labor cost.
Veeam Data Platform enables us to store backups not only on-premises but also in the cloud, providing an off-site backup location that we need. This allows us to have a disaster recovery plan to spin up infrastructure in the cloud if something severe and significant happens to our on-premises environment.
We currently do not use any NAS devices with Veeam Data Platform.
Veeam is significantly more cost-effective, which is why we chose Veeam. Veeam meets our minimum requirements, so it was good enough for us.

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

No

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

It is well-suited for simple and moderately complex environments. I think it would work well in complex environments as well. There is much flexibility in the product. However, I think Veeam Data Platform requires more hands-on maintenance and implementation than other products, where you can implement and things just work. Veeam's product here requires more labor time, but it is also significantly cheaper.
