Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use Veeam to back up the majority of our server infrastructure, such as virtual machines and NFS storage. We also use it to back up the majority of our M365 tenancy.
Pros
- The Hardened Repository solution is very much set and forget.
- Tape backup management is intuitive.
- The S3 and Backblaze integrations work seamlessly.
- The File-Level Restore feature for Virtual machines feels native and removes the hassle of using command-line tools and managing virtual machine images.
- The path to installing updates and updating various components is streamlined, making patching a breeze.
Cons
- The ability to backup powerbi would be brilliant.
- Licensing for educational institutions could be improved. We had a PB of disk that was never used due to licensing, which we couldn't afford to pay for. This left hardware going to waste and forced us to be more selective about what we back up. A simple software restriction made using hardware we owned unusable.
- It would be great if Veeam were entirely Linux-based. Having a full-blown Windows VM and using RDP to access VBR feels wasteful.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
- NAS filers
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
- Integration with cyber-security tools for SecureRestore
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)

More than initially anticipated, but this is due to infrastructure changing and growing over time.
- Instant file recovery, saving hours of staff time as it can all be done in the GUI.
- Setting up Veeam infrastructure is pretty straightforward, and there is plenty of documentation to help with setup.
I've never experienced anything before Veeam, but I hate to imagine how bad it was before Veeam was implemented.
Yes. We utilise backups in Backblaze and utilise the M365 integration to backup a good chunk of our tenancy.
Yes, we use it to back up our main NFS file shares and NAS storage used by various systems across the business.
I've not used any other solutions as Veeam was already set up when I started working at my organisation.
