Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are supporting both AR and AP transactions with Vertex and use them for US Sales Tax, VAT, and GST. Currently, we have Vertex implemented for about 20 countries all over the globe and supporting Value added tax.

Pros and Cons

Tax calculation in case of triangulation.
Tax automation in case of customer certificates.
Automated tax rate update.
With Tax Assist Rules, you can easily get your tax calculation system fitted to country-specific requirements.

Reporting: Vertex VAT Compliance is not fully ready to support all EU country's requirements.
Data storage.
Online reporting in VVC: many countries require to report VAT Declaration in an electronic way. This function is still missing for some of the countries from VVC.

Return on Investment

Tax automation is positive. With Vertex O, we could automate our Tax Calculation process, which resulted in fewer support tasks around tax.

Vertex Tax Accuracy

Bundle handling is not working well. We would like to have a solution for orders where items are bounded. Of course, the solution needs to support not just the Vertex side but the Oracle side, too.

Scalability

As soon as we acquire a new company, we are implementing Vertex for that entity. If that entity is within the EU, we can implement Vertex easily but if that company is China or in India, Vertex implementation is not that easy.

Usability

Sometimes tax on transactions needs to be overridden manually, but in most cases - mainly on the Receivables side - we can automate tax calculation, and manual work is not required anymore.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle BPEL Process Manager and Oracle E-Business Suite

Vertex is more flexible and by using Vertex you need fewer people to maintain tax calculations. In addition, Tax rate update is maintained by Vertex, so you do not need to track and support tax rate update.

For India tax Vertex is less appropriate; in Vertex Exchange in Barcelona this year, I have talked to many Product Owners and learned that there is no current practice for India Tax Calculation in Vertex O. However, Vertex is well suited for the US region and EU region.

Vertex is an enhanced Tax Calculation System.
