Overall Satisfaction with Vultr

We use Vultr to host various research projects and team infrastructure (websites, databases, etc.) Vultr is highly unique in that they provide BGP speaking capability if you BYO prefix, along with a live real-time view of Vultr's routing table - invaluable if you are doing research on network conditions, want to monitor BGP logs, or fine-tune your own BGP announcements.

Pros

  • wide arrange of offerings utilizing open-source OSes and APIs
  • BGP speaking capability
  • fast and response customer service

Cons

  • better user management. currently creating a user under another person's account requires using an email address that is not registered with Vultr already. It would be nice to have a single account login with separate profiles/UI views when associated with different organizations or groups.
  • Vultr has enabled many of our research projects because of its ease to use and its BGP features. Thumbs up!
  • Price is lower than most competitors
  • Vultr's user management system has made it a little clunky to keep track of user logins and permissions
Vultr is reasonably priced, and the pricing of its services is very transparent: the price you see when spinning up a server or provisioning a block store is the price you're going to pay. I wish that a price breakdown per service was provided in the billing section - identifying what costed what requires digging into the invoice PDF.
Yes, Vultr's growing number of global locations was instrumental to our network research projects. By spinning up instances in new locations, we were able to get a vantage point view of routing in nearly every part of the globe, and have more visibility of routing under various upstream providers. Spinning up servers in new locations was seamless - no weird per-location restrictions like other cloud providers.
See above. Vultr's expansion was a boon to our research team and let us increase the breadth of our projects with no platform crossover or real challenges.
Vultr is a dream to use after coming from AWS - the products are intuitively named, don't require gaining a certification to use, and have better documentation.
Vultr's documentation is a little less comprehensive and organized than google cloud's; however, its pricing and billing model is much better.
Vultr has many more features than Fastly and is more appropriate for building all layers of a full-stack application.

Do you think Vultr delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Vultr's feature set?

Yes

Did Vultr live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of Vultr go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Vultr again?

Yes

It's great for building things quickly from scratch. Servers are easily configurable and there are few proprietary features that require getting used to, so you spend less time learning about the Vultr environment and more time on your application (the exact opposite of AWS).
