Likelihood to Recommend

1Password

1Password should be used to store any information securely, including logins/passwords, credit card and bank information, drivers licenses, software licenses, notes and documents, and many other things. You shouldn't really use the same password for multiple sites, and 1Password is great for generating random passwords, storing them, and making them easy to retrieve. The group plans work great for sharing information between people as well. It really works best on a Mac. I've used 1Password on Windows a bit, and it works just fine, but it doesn't seem to work as well as on the Mac.

Bitium

Best suited for companies that use the same services across multiple teams, services that might require support at one point. For us, it is very easy to share access to either the IT support team or to me, as the Salesforce administrator, and we can easily take care of the issue and then log out without any hassle.

I would not strongly recommend it for single users, who don't need to share access to others.

Pros

1Password

  • Securely stores passwords & sensitive data
  • Integration with iPhone's password solution (ability to utilize 1Password info rather than Apple keychain items)
  • Integration with Mac Touch ID
  • Ability to access multiple accounts within a single interface (and search them all -- or not -- as needed)

Bitium

  • Sharing access. It's as easy as 1-2-3 with Bitium, no more hassle with sharing the actual password and then changing it, violating company policies, etc.
  • Lots of apps supported. In all three years since we are using Bitium, we haven't encountered any app that would not be supported by it.
  • Easy to set up strong passwords. Another very easy and intuitive feature: when you are setting up an app, you can ask Bitium to generate an A-level password automatically, that you can therefore use with ease.

Cons

1Password

  • The price is relatively exorbitant for your average user. I confess that I am using it based on a free license I got from working at Apple several years back; even loving this software as much as I do, $50 for a single license is a steep ask, especially in today's world of free applications
  • The interface has not been updated in quite a while. Not that it is bad, per se, and is very utilitarian, but a small facelift would be nice

Bitium

  • Apps crashing. From time to time, some apps stop working in Bitium and they come back only after a while (1, 2, 8 hrs). We don't have a clear explanation for this yet.
  • Very tied to Chrome. Bitium is almost 'married' to Chrome, making it unusable in other browsers, which is sometimes problematic.
  • Sometimes slow Chrome Add-on. From time to time, the add-on seems so unresponsive that it is easier to go to the web dashboard and log in from there in the app you were looking for.

Usability

The 1Password app design is top notch, much better than a couple other password managers I've looked at. The app and service are very flexible, allowing for many different types of data storage. The browser extensions generally work very well, allowing for easy access to login information while using pretty much any modern web browser.

I haven't had a lot of issues with 1Password in the past, but I have browsed the 1Password support forums a bit when I have needed an answer for something. The support staff seems to be very responsive. They seem to respond to pretty much everything posted in the support forums.

Alternatives Considered

1Password

There are a number of alternatives. In particular, I believe LastPass is its closest competitor, then you also have the built in browser password savers. Those are not, to me, a viable alternative, however, because they are not easy to port between machines (mobile or desktop). LastPass is a good product, especially for free, but it just feels ineffably *janky* compared to 1Password. Like, it will interrupt you and ask to save your log in when you're just filling out a basic, non-login form. It feels like a javascript applet compared to a native application like 1Password.

Return on Investment

1Password

  • Reduced the number of licenses we have had to buy, as we are able to share log ins for certain sites, like Udemy.
  • I honestly don't know if there is a per-user license cost when using the business plan but I don't believe so.
  • The return on investment has been high. No negative impact aside from the initial investment, to my knowledge.

Bitium

  • Everyone is now required to have A-level passwords, so the overall level of security has increased a lot.
  • Having a secured way of sharing access to different apps, users are now very open to being helped more hands-on by the support teams, not fearing that their credentials might be exposed or later used.
