Ahrefs

Ahrefs has great prices for the data they provide. As a freelancer, I know there are cheaper options, but they do not provide the backlink data that Ahrefs provides. As an in-house SEO, I believe that Ahrefs is a must for research. If I had one SEO tool, it would be Ahrefs because it has most SEO tools all in its suite.

I think it's well suited to people that are looking to track keywords for their business or a number of clients. If you are looking for a single system to do site management and rankings, then this is lacking. However I think it' a good tool to use if you don't mind using multiple ones.

Pros

  • I love how Ahrefs Site Explorer includes a list of the broken links to a site, the backlinks pointed to these broken links, and the date these broken links are found. It makes identifying quality 404 error pages so much easier, especially when we have the option to download a file with all this information.
  • I love how we can gauge what the top content and top pages are for any website using Ahrefs Site Explorer. Assessing the top content and pages on a website provides insight into what we can do to amp our content strategy.
  • I also like the anchors cloud function on Ahrefs Site Explorer, because it's a clear overview of what anchor texts are most prominent for a given website, and allows us to make adjustments if there's a lack of anchor text variety.

Cons

  • Ahrefs Site Explorer provides an overview of domain health and the issues that can be fixed, and sometimes the suggested "critical issues" can be an astronomical number and not accurate.
  • For certain features on Ahrefs Site Explorer, there can a more elaborate description/guide on how to utilize the feature.

  • We moved off positionly as we needed more features that it is not currently delivering on, not for any fault of the application, but we just needed more.

Usability

Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

Alternatives Considered

It's very clear that Ahrefs has a larger database than their competitors. I never run into issues where this tool isn't able to evaluate keywords - even if they are very long tail niche keywords. The link section of the tool is also very useful. Ahrefs is able to clean up the links to root domains better than competitors, making link tracking much easier than it has been in the past.

Positionaly was fine really, it did its job effectively and fast, with little problems, we moved to Agency Analytics for more features, but I was very happy with it as a tool.

Return on Investment

  • Ahrefs has allowed me to create content sections which have become very valuable to our site
  • Ahrefs allows me to review other websites to discover strategies that have worked for competitors
  • We have been able to track our link building progress on influencer campaigns.

  • I can't say that it has an effect on the business really, its a great tool for what it is and we do need to track [data] for clients so it's essential in reporting, which can be seen as a financial boon, as without reporting clients may not pay.
