If you can implement across all departments, and you are confident in the cleanliness of the data you are importing into the system, Altru is a good system for you. You'd benefit from having a strong, internal IT staff member to help with the process, and spending the time and money on web form design

Blackbaud CRM

The Blackbaud Internet Solutions (BBIS) platform is still being evaluated as it provides external web presence (content management system), donor self service, event registration, email marketing, revenue processing and has an interface with the application.

Pros

  • Event and Program Management - It's easy to create events and program series and sell tickets online through online forms.
  • Annual Fund Donations - It's simple to create donation forms and gift processing is easy and fast with batch inputs.

  • Locked configuration strategy- if you have a high turn over, or an undocumented culture you will want to find a solution that supports change management. The config files are locked in Blackbaud which means some things you can't change. For orgs that have frequent turn-over this strategy is helpful.
  • Blackbaud has tutorials online as well as classes in person staff can take. They offer certificates so supervisors know that staff have been exposed to a body of knowledge. When staff members take the workshops it is important to provide them the time to practice and use what they just learned. We purchased (for a high fee) a pass for any of our staff to take as many of the workshops as possible. We also offered this to key volunteers- as more knowledge makes folks more employable and more comfortable.
  • Blackbaud has a very strong team of sales staff. Make sure you demo and that you know what you want. Fees are sadly complicated so use a spreadsheet. Once a quote is sent in writing my experience is there was very little flexibility in pricing. So your first call is really important. Do your homework.

Cons

  • Custom querying features can be cumbersome to build and don't always give you the results you expect.
  • Online payments cannot always be re-designated, which can be difficult with high level donors and board members make pledge payments through an online form and then they cannot be re-designated to their pledge.
  • Multiple donor or membership programs can be difficult to manage.

  • Reports can be tricky to get correct
  • Mass imports are hard to get correct - you often have to refer back to the fields, which means you have to start over completely
  • Sometimes, the system just runs super slow

They did not stand behind their product. I had to tell my story/ explain my problem to multiple people, multiple times and in the end the issue that was determined to be a product functionality issue, was never resolved. They company never even apologized for the problem or offered any help in resolving all the issues and lost time it cost us.

eTapestry was the database in use when my boss and I came on board. We did evaluations in terms of price and capabilites and it wasn't worth it to switch. Many other databases were much more expensive, did not offer similar services, and were not as user-friendly. The Blackbaud team did a lot to help us with customization and cleaning up the database along the way. Additionally, training videos and online help systems really sold us on keeping the system

Return on Investment

  • We've had some minor issues with donors in multiple membership programs receiving the incorrect communications which querying should have eliminated, but on the whole, it's no more or less than with any system.

  • Increased employee efficiency, as the database can just be used for all contacts
  • Not sure how to word this - but looking better to donors and others in the community. Multiple people from Goodwill have different conversations with the same individual and not repeat asks or other conversations, instead we can actually build on the relationship and really respect that person's time more.
  • Maybe negative - lots of training & management needs to be done to coordinate everything
