Amazon Elastic File System (EFS) vs. Media Temple IaaS Cloud vs. Navisite Managed Infrastructure Services (NaviCloud)

While the idea is to utilize it enterprise wide; it sometimes doesn't work well in smaller applications and that causes slowdowns and impacts productivity. Also when evaluating EFS versus EBS - one needs to look at cost as EFS is a lot more expensive to implement and run so you need to weigh cost benefits of both systems and choose the best for you.

I think Media Temple is well suited for a somewhat tech-savvy and sophisticated dev shop that wants something powerful to use but doesn't want the complexity of something like Rackspace or AWS. If you don't need an insane level of control and would have something more on a managed basis, Media Tempe IaaS is the way to go.

Clarify before hand any additional charges for remote hand and arrangement/SLA for remote hand. Negotiate well on these terms as they tend to be more flexible around this. Clarify shipping and handling charges if any.

• This is very easy to setup and has a great performance.

• For early age start it would be costly
• Not necessary for small scale system, but very beneficial for system which have high TPS and huge user base

• There are often errors with automatic updates and management of 3rd party tools including software such as Plesk.
• I think the communication options could be improved. It isn't as easy to set up alerts as you would want.
• Your plans are grandfathered so you are somewhat stuck with an old plan.

• San Jose facility power outage caused damage to company's credibility, this should not occur again being 7x24 facility and backup generator

The documentation is sufficient for setting up and it is basic NFS for mounting so not much support is required. I have not had any issues to warrant a request with AWS support.

We've been using both DreamHost and Media Temple for years and Media Temple has a better overall experience, offering a more robust solution in terms of scalability and customization. On the other hand, DreamHost has great support and a better pricing policy. So it depends on what are you looking for and your budget as well.

Navisite's rates were better and they seemed to have more SQL Server expertise. This was about 5 years ago and it may not be the case anymore

• Cost is always a paramount issue when looking at ROI
• It is fast and if that's what you need for your implementation - you probably will not find a better solution
• Expertise in EFS is sometimes hard to come by so it's best to look at your employee's ability to grasp this technology. Otherwise, it's a pretty steep learning curve.

• Cost savings by not having a full-time DBA on staff - saving of at least 50K a year

• Navisite team will try to fix issue if possible - e.g. shrink log files that have grown
