Amazon SNS

Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) is well suited for applications built on event driven architecture. It makes it easy to log and track events in real time from the source to the destination. The permissions should be configured properly in order to use SNS else while implementing you can come across Access Denied errors. The dashboards are difficult to maintain to track the utilization.

If you have a large or small blog following/audience, this is an excellent tool to help keep readers engaged and on top of your new content releases. You can also utilize this product for automated DRIP campaigns that will, following a schedule you create, notify users at preset intervals to help nurture your leads or existing customers as part of your sales funnel. Even new bloggers with smaller audiences can utilize a tool like this to help generate more consistent web traffic to your content. I am averaging a +16% clickthrough rate regularly on my RSS to push notifications after just a few months of use.

Pros

Amazon SNS

  • Built in for quicker setup within AWS ecosystem.
  • Trusted as you control the users and configuration via IAM and easy access controls.
  • Can be sent to S3 simple storage or for long term storage if required.
  • Can be used in many regions, same configs.

  • Easy-to-use admin system; even non-technical team members could understand what to do without training.
  • Flexibility of configuration and visual previews of what the alert experience would be like made it easy explain options before implementation
  • Segment system and API gave us enough control to serve notifications in the right language, which was important for our multi-lingual website

Cons

Amazon SNS

  • At times you receive access denied errors which are annoying.
  • Rarely do you receive internal failure errors where you can't access the information. It is rare but it does happen.
  • You are required to add an MWS Authentication Token every so often. I wish it would pull that information automatically for you so you don't have to go searching for it.

  • I can tell they are based somewhere on the other side of the world, so when it's middle of the day here in the USA, they aren't always very responsive.
  • There have been a couple hiccups with billing issues that mainly stemmed from them not having an internal billing system, but had it outsourced to another company.

Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) is a fairly simple tool to use, with the only complexity coming around creating new endpoints. Sending messages and transferring them to clients is an "it just works" out of the box solution, and on that basis, I have to say this tool does its job well, and easily.

Amazon Simple Notification Sevices (SNS) support depends on your usage pattern and definitely on your support plan as an enterprise with AWS. Before reaching out to support you should read their documentation, as they have mentioned almost all the common issues and their solutions there. However, for specific issues, they generally respond in 1-2 business days.

Their support staff are experts who are beyond helpful! I needed support with a certificate issue, after migrating one of our sites from HTTP to HTTPS, They handled it and helped very effectively, absolutely loved the cooperation. They saved me a lot of time with guiding me over the issues and I didn't needed to search on forums and read technical documentation on my own.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon SNS

Amazon Simple Notification Service and PagerDuty have been used by various organizations. Amazon SNS is ideal if you're within an AWS environment. PagerDuty is used when we are working outside of Amazon Web Services. Though PagerDuty is more expensive than Amazon SNS they do have better reporting capabilities in specific areas.

Return on Investment

Amazon SNS

  • Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) saved us a lot of extra coding time by providing straightforward functionality we needed in our ad campaign automation tool.
  • Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) allows us to maintain a consistent, serverless model within our applications.

  • I have no data on that since the company that this was implemented for has since folded.
  • It would have been a very good thing to increase sales if we had the chance to actually use it more, but we shut the site down...
  • The more things we could add to our marketing mix (especially low cost ones) the better off we would be.
