AWS Elastic Beanstalk
AWS Elastic Beanstalk is well suited for [the] rapid development of applications that use standard compute platforms based on popular programming languages. So getting a Go, Python, Ruby, or Node.js app going in AWS Elastic Beanstalk will be easy. For non-standard applications, containers provide another option for using AWS Elastic Beanstalk. In either case, AWS Elastic Beanstalk is well suited for applications that are [self-contained]. AWS Elastic Beanstalk is also good for development or test environments that need a built-in deployment method.AWS Elastic Beanstalk is less appropriate for complex applications that rely on multiple AWS services. While deploying and running the base code might be easy to get going, it may be difficult to apply permissions and integrations with the other services.

Proxmox VE is a good alternative to the most famous cloud providers. It's the top solution when you want to run applications on your own cloud in your house or on remote servers. If the company has a remote and in-house server with Proxmox VE is possible to use the same code and the same VM on both sites, this is not possible with the standard cloud providers. Proxmox VE is the lead application also when you need total control of the hardware, base system, and all the stuff that are hidden on standard cloud providers.

Pros
AWS Elastic Beanstalk
- AWS Elastic Beanstalk was easy to implement, we only had to insert the application code to have it up and running in a few minutes. This helps us to launch company campaigns for different areas such as marketing, commercial and human resources.
- It has a fast learning curve, since the training material of the platform is public on the manufacturer's portal, furthermore it is easy to interact and intuitive for developers.
- The productivity of the equipment is optimized since they are not worrying about preparing the platform or infrastructure, they only have to attend to what is required by the application and its operation and this maintenance.
- The indicators and metrics that it has, ensure that the application cannot be saturated and have a performance problem, with AWS Elastic Beanstalk the application can scale resources when needed automatically.

- ZFS storage out of the box. The integration with ZFS is fantastic. You can easily create pools to store your VM images and data on, and the Proxmox web UI provides an easy way to check drive health, ZFS scrub status, etc.
- Great web UI. Practically everything configurable is available to do so from the web user interface. You'll rarely need to drop to the command line for administrative tasks, unless you want to, in which case you can do that too. The UI also provides graphs and visualisations to help you keep check of how everything is performing.
- Easy to setup a high availability cluster. Although Proxmox VE works perfectly well on a single server, you can also install it on multiple hosts and setup a cluster.
- Uses a Debian core system with an Ubuntu based kernel. This means everything to do with the base operating system is tried and trusted. We use a lot of Debian and Ubuntu installs, so having this run underneath Proxmox VE was an added bonus for us.

AWS Elastic Beanstalk
- Limited to the frameworks and configurations that AWS supports. There is no native way to use Elastic Beanstalk to deploy a Go application behind Nginx, for example.
- It's not always clear what's changed on an underlying system when AWS updates an EB stack; the new version is announced, but AWS does not say what specifically changed in the underlying configuration. This can have unintended consequences and result in additional work in order to figure out what changes were made.

- Can't manage ZFS replication or snapshots as easily as I'd like
- Encrypted disks aren't easily deployed in VMs
- Moving disks between VMs is not automated

As our technology grows, it makes more sense to individually provision each server rather than have it done via beanstalk. There are several reasons to do so, which I cannot explain without further diving into the architecture itself, but I can tell you this. With automation, you also loose the flexibility to morph the system for your specific needs. So if you expect that in future you need more customization to your deployment process, then there is a good chance that you might try to do things individually rather than use an automation like beanstalk.

It is a great tool to manage your applications. You just need to write the codes, and after that with one click, your app will be online and accessible from the internet. That is a huge help for people who do not know about infrastructure or do not want to spend money on maintaining infrastructure.

Out of every product I have used for this, Proxmox VE is the most concise, clear, and functional I have ever seen. I continue to use Proxmox VE even after occasionally comparing alternatives available because of it's usability, design concept, and great support of features. It's very unlikely I will find a product that can even compete with Proxmox VE in every angle of what Proxmox VE provides.

Proxmox VE's ha-cluster functionality is very much improved, though does have a not-very-often occurrence of failure. In a 2-node cluster of Proxmox VE, HA can fail causing an instance that is supposed to migrate between the two nodes stop and fail until manually recovered through the command-line tools provided. Other than this, the HA clustering capability of Proxmox VE has proven to be reliable in 3 or more clustered environments with much less chance of these failures to occur.

As I described earlier it has been really cost effective and really easy for fellow developers who don't want to waste weeks and weeks into learning and manually deploying stuff which basically takes month to create and go live with the Minimal viable product (MVP). With AWS Beanstalk within a week a developer can go live with the Minimal viable product easily.

- Do as many experiments as you can before you commit on using beanstalk or other AWS features.- Keep future state in mind. Think through what comes next, and if that is technically possible to do so.- Always factor in cost in terms of scaling.- We learned a valuable lesson when we wanted to go multi-region, because then we realized many things needs to change in code. So if you plan on using this a lot, factor multiple regions.

Proxmox VE provides everything you need to quickly add new storage mediums, network and local, as well as networking interfaces, such as using Linux standard bridges and now Open-vSwitch bridges which can be even more scalable than before. Proxmox VE 4.0 dropped support for OpenVZ in favor of the more well supported and native LXC and made an upgrade path to it very simple.

Return on Investment
AWS Elastic Beanstalk
- Greatly reduced time in setting up and deploying test environments has saved a lot of hours and money.
- Near-zero maintenance means that we don't spend any time tending to servers, the app containers just work.
- The initial learning curve is a little steep to get services hosted in Elastic Beanstalk talking to external services like Redis, MongoDB, etc; but once one understands the pattern, development is a breeze.
- The command line interface has enabled us to build many utility scripts that simplify our development workflow, thereby saving time.

- It's a great solution allowing you to use all the server's resources on a single platform, saving energy, network resources and trouble of not having access to a troubled system. The ROI is immediate!
- Very secure system, allowing you to run your firewall directly on this system. Again immediate ROI.
