Ayasdi Core

Well suited: 1. If data set is not yet well organized.2. Hypothesis is not yet established.3. Need to visually explore to find patterns of data (often when analysts have no good understanding of data)4. When [you need] to analyze events with a timeframe (specifically a sequence of events as a transaction)Less appropriate1. If a data set is very large, such as Hadoop data, it becomes hard to manage data pipeline and process to feed the data into Ayasdi. To be feed into Ayasdi, data should be aggregated or organized to some level.

Microsoft Power BI

Power BI is well suited for flat file databases, although the pivot column feature can help other types. Particularly great where visualizations can provide better insights than data tables so great for deep insights into trend evolution. Can be challenging to build profit & loss statements with subtotals and percentages based on sales as one single neat statement.

Pros

Ayasdi Core

  • Ayasdi Core provides an easy way to get some insight on data. Typically analytics may require having a model or hypothesis before starting to look into the data, but Ayasdi lets you just feed the data first then start seeing what the data looks like.
  • Ayasdi Core's topological network visualization is quite unique. It allows you to explore patterns and potential relations between multiple data elements. A user can also dynamically navigate data with different aspects on the web.
  • The Web version of Ayasdi is easy to use, stable, and fast. It hasn't crashed even when we feed it a lot of data sets, although it took time.

Microsoft Power BI

  • Reporting, reporting, reporting. Power BI is great for reporting. I can create a number of different charts, views, and dashboards for a number of different audiences. It's very helpful for executives to see the big picture, but dynamic enough to take the same data sources and create detailed reports on very specific elements.
  • Power BI is easy to use. We went from manual data entry and report creation in Excel to Power BI. There was a learning curve, but I was able to find enough training online to get started.
  • Automating the report creation is wonderful. It takes all the manual work out of my old daily processes. My supervisors and bosses have been impressed too. They think it's magic, which makes me look good.

Cons

Ayasdi Core

  • Use of Python SDK is required to feed data into Ayasdi, but it lacks training materials or sample codes for a novice to get started.
  • Although Web UI of Ayasdi is looking good, often it freezes when the user runs an analysis. It doesn't crash but the web page needs to be refreshed to see the progress of analysis.
  • Algorithms provided by Ayasdi, such as metrics types, lens types need to be explained (what they are and what their strengths and weaknesses are). We had to Google or do research on our own to understand what they are.

Microsoft Power BI

  • Initial creation of reports, even from processed data sets is not simple.
  • The on-premises reporting (crucial for a defense industry company) is extremely expensive, as it is only included in the Power BI Premium package.
  • User training is usually required to ensure that full functionality of the dashboards and their built in features are utilized.

The languages within Power BI can be quite the learning curve, but the actual dashboard functionality is a breeze. The most difficult aspect for me has been learning different languages to get the most out of Power BI (DAX, M). But the ease of creating great looking and interactive dashboards has been outstanding.

[Microsoft] Power BI support is pretty generic, and it does take time to reach a right resource. Very often their solutions are KB articles not really relevant to my problem. This an area for improvement. I always try to research my issue on PBI message boards/user community sites.

Alternatives Considered

Ayasdi Core

We had a working group that has been using R studio for the general purpose of statistical analysis in our organization. Although it is a great tool that provides enriched function sets, it is time-consuming for our clinical analysts to learn the tool to see the first result. R is somewhat of a developer-oriented/friendly tool. Ayasdi is friendly to a domain analyst or end users. Plus, support and consulting from Ayasdi were excellent so that we could get knowledge from them immediately whenever we needed.

Microsoft Power BI

I am not a data analyst, but as a user, I prefer the UI of Power BI compared to Periscope Data. Periscope Data has some really great functionality and can build some really useful reports, but Power BI seems to have more useful visuals and is easier for non-database admins/non-data analysts to generate some interesting, basic reports that help them in their role. I've also found courses to help you learn how to use Power BI, from the simple functions up to more complex processes (and get a certification for it) for which I was unable to find for Periscope Data.

Microsoft Power BI

  • I'm using the free version, so the only investment was the time spent to learn how to use the product (which as an Excel user, was very short).
  • I use Excel to store every single bit of information about all the projects I do, and being able to see them visualized helped me see some redundant steps I was taking.
  • No negative impact at all for me.
