BBEdit

I'm primarily a graphic designer who does occasional web development. For me, BBEdit works very well. I use it both for developer projects (editing code, editing system files) and for general text processing (cleaning up, formatting, or extracting text). I like that it offers real-time previews of edits to web project files. It comes with some nice editor themes and supports adding more or customizing them. I expect that for some coders, it will be inadequate. It is not an IDE. On the other end of the spectrum, someone who expects an experience more like Microsoft Word will be very disappointed; or if they wanted something more along the lines of Windows Notepad, they may find it to be overkill. It is an ASCII text editor with many advanced commands and tools built-in.

Notepad++

Notepad++ is a great lightweight text editor and is an immediate install to replace the default Windows Notepad for me. It is suitable for quickly opening and editing single text files and for jotting down quick notes that may be temporary.It is great for quick edits on copy & pasting pages of text. I would use it to update paths using vertical selection or through regex search & replace.It is not a full IDE for any kind of code editing but it is very fast to open single code files, xml or json and is my preferred way to look at contents in these files rather than opening in a code editor.

Pros

BBEdit

  • BBEdit remembers what I had open, so I never have to worry about losing work when I accidentally close the software. It will hold onto information almost indefinitely, so that the next time I open a program, I can access the information that I may have forgotten to save. Thankfully, its save function is also very simple to use, so I recommend still saving your work as needed.
  • Scripts are the most important aspect of BBEdit for the company I work for. Being able to import scripts and create new ones all in the same location are great.

Notepad++

  • Robust and full of features such as programming language specific settings
  • Like being able to create new tabs, so I can easily go back to a prior project
  • For a computer savvy person, its simple to use...simple menus, robust search features
  • The ability to build and test macros, is more of a universal programming environment than a text editor

Cons

BBEdit

  • The cost of this product has just become too much for the functionality that most people need. You can find free or $10 tools that do what most people need to do.
  • The BBEdit program has lots of functionality, but could it be too much? Are there too many options?
  • It seems that there are too many upgrades.

Notepad++

  • Stability - It can be buggy and when it crashes it can often be only remedied by reinstalling it. I've had to do that a number of times.
  • Add-In Quality - It appears that some add-ins aren't up to snuff as the other add-ins are. They too can cause Notepad++ to crash.
  • Appearance - It just appears outdated, not really a big deal.

I've been using BBEdit — no joke — for nearly three decades now. Believe it or not, I'm still getting "upgrade pricing" 13 versions later. Bare Bones' support has always been stellar, and pricing continues to be affordable compared to similar tools.

I haven't needed to utilize any support related to Notepad++. I guess this is a good thing because I found it to be quite intuitive. There are almost infinite features you can tweak and plugins you can download but I haven't had to do that because Notepad++ is really good right out of the box.

Alternatives Considered

BBEdit

BBEdit wins over TextEdit every time. They are as different as chalk and cheese. I am so glad we moved to BBEdit.

Notepad++

You can't compete with free software, especially when that free software doesn't come with unnecessary bloatware and is packed with powerful tools. The closest software that I have used that comes close to Notepad++ has a simple SQL code editing tool built into it, but the software is expensive and only really works for SQL. I'm surprised that they haven't started charging for Notepad++ yet.

Return on Investment

BBEdit

  • It saves me time, not only with web projects, but even with design, when I want to strip out formatting in text, I bring it in to BBEdit to clean it up.

Notepad++

  • Notepad++ has saved me time for quick coding jobs where I don't need to fire up a full-featured code editor.
  • It saves me a lot of hassle by automating the formatting and sorting of text in a variety of use cases, especially for creating or editing mock data for projects.
  • It is a free product (although you can donate to support its development) and has been a great tool for me to rely on over the years.
