IBM Cloud Object Storage

Scenarios where IBM Cloud Object Storage is well suited:
* Building enterprise-grade data solutions with large teams
* Where an all-in-one platform is needed to solve complex problems that require an ecosystem of tools to work together
* Where IBM services already exist in the business
* Projects where scalability, security and technology integration are key drivers
Scenarios where IBM Cloud Object Storage is not well suited:
* Small teams with small budgets may be better off using open source tools
* Solving niche industry problems that require niche solutions

IBM System Storage DS8900F (formerly DS8000)

Well suited for mainframe CKD based applications. There is unmatched synergy with IBM zSeries when compared to the competition, for example zHPF, SUPERPAV, zHyperLink, cache management and replication technologies. For distributed, the fact that Copy Services Manager comes with the box is a great move on IBMs part to provide replication capability no matter what the applicaiton. I think the DS8k is less suited for smaller distributed environments. I think product overlap with V9000 in this case

Pros

IBM Cloud Object Storage

  • IBM Cloud Object Storage is fast, secure, reliable and provides quick support when required.
  • Step by step documentation is easy to understand and implement for new users across the organization.
  • It is highly customizable and available based on the need of the use-case.

  • Remote Copy -- The DS8k has decades of excellent code built to handle the most demanding environments for mainframe or open systems and can be combined with automation solutions like GDPS or Copy Services Manager
  • Reliability and Availability -- This is the platform that gets used for the most demanding environments, even when FICON attachment isn't required
  • Continued enhancement -- IBM continues to put resources into the DS8k and the platform has advanced with the technology from z and power
  • Mainframe synergy -- Poughkeepsie communicates and works very closely with the DS8k developers

Cons

IBM Cloud Object Storage

  • While this platform has been around, it does take some getting used. The interface could be refined. My Firefox Browser automatically closed when selecting some options and creating new objects as an example.
  • The tutorials are a bit outdated in comparison to the screens shown. We understand the system is constantly improving. The tutorials should reflect the changes in the interface.
  • There are many pre-trained models. However, it is not clear as to how those models were trained, what bias may exist in the training data, and how a user could improve those models unless we simply have to build our own.

  • The DS8000 family still lacks deduplication and compression algorithms.
  • For best results on replication enablement, optional Copy Services Manager is suggested.

I have been working in IT sector for more than 15 years. I have worked with various vendors. IBM's sales team, support team have been really helpful. After we start to use their product, their UX design team also contacted us to get feedback from us. They are really interested about our experience.

IBM's professional service for migrating data and implementing new cloud environment was perfect. They started to help us before we begin to bring together all data such as how can it could be best to transfer all data without problems. During the migration they watched all the process closely to prevent any failure. Lastly, after the migration, they gave us trainings on implementation.

Alternatives Considered

IBM Cloud Object Storage

I have evaluated Amazon S3 and Google's Cloud Platform.IBM Cloud Platform is well documented and very integrated with its other range of cloud services. It's quite difficult to differentiate between them all. IBM Cloud Storage is not a service I would have considered on its own merit, but with the power of Watson, which was an absolute pleasure to work with, alongside the cloud server options, I think the IBM cloud ecosystem provides something for everyone.

DS8882F provides CKD storage in a manageable footprint. Its advantage over FlashSystem is its interoperability with IBM Z Systems

Return on Investment

IBM Cloud Object Storage

  • Prior to cloud storage, we used on-premises storage devices to store and backup, and sometimes it was a headache to scale up or down the storage according to our needs. With the introduction of Cloud Object Storage, we don't have to worry about scaling.
  • The uptime is also improved a lot after the introduction of Cloud Object Storage in our organization
  • Obviously, it's a very cost-effective way to store and archive data.

  • I do not know the cost. If it prevents future system wide outages, it will be a great ROI for our company.
