We've been happy with them for the most part for use in our K-12 segment. Please also know that the review is for thoughts and sharing and does not represent or infer a product endorsement by myself or on behalf of the University of Hawaii system.

WatchGuard Network Security

I have personally installed hundreds of WatchGuard Network Security firewalls in businesses ranging from 2- to 3-person operations to hundreds of employees, across many different business types from real-estate to finance to plumbing. For any business that needs a cost-effective solution for a next-gen firewall/remote office connection/integrated wifi, WatchGuard will work wonderfully. If you have hundreds of locations, a cloud-based solution may work a little better than WatchGuard, but they have their drawbacks as well.

  • Longevity and reliability

WatchGuard Network Security

  • URL Filtering: Extremely effective for blocking of questionable content and protecting from phishing sites.
  • Antivirus: Our clients have seen far fewer active threats when a WatchGuard Network Security Device is in place.
  • Data Loss Prevention: A valuable tool for our clients who require more security when it comes to metadata and personal data leaving the network.

Cons

Cyberoam

  • Without mentioning an alternative brand, there is another leading company who has updated with firewall UI quite a bit. They offer an expanded line-up to meet a wider array of needs including specific appliances for web caching, proxy servers, and other products that have the same and familiar UI across the products. Each of the products does have some overlap so that customers can choose the right appliance for their use case.
  • After being acquired by Sophos, we saw our year-over-year costs escalate significantly since our original maintenance contract. They should consider revisiting the pricing, especially for education.
  • They should consider a current market analysis and see how the market is changing and adapting with other lower cost appliances for their product line up.

WatchGuard Network Security

  • Partner communications on technical issues. For example the undocumented feature of SDWAN hidden route. There is still no documentation on that.
  • Too infrequent communications about high incidence technical support issues. We do not want to have to be encountering known issues and then having outages or problems that we then have to put in tickets about.
  • Pay attention to your most highly technical partners, not just those that sell a lot of equipment. The highly technical partners can and do provide very usable feedback that can make the products better.
  • WG wants partners to build relationships with people inside WG so we can drive solutions to problems, but too frequently, we get no response to emails sent to the proper internal resources about legitimate issues.

To be replaced, we would need to see a clear set of reasons that acutely address the points I have made in favor of this solution, and they would need to be Cheaper, easier to use, give more clarity into the networking, and create easier dashboards and reports for managemnt of users networking and threat actors attempts to compromise the network.

The overall usability gets a good rating as the WatchGuard firewalls are fairly easy to deploy. One does not have to have knowledge of their CLI structure to deploy it which makes it easier for a wider range of people. I would prefer to have a more in-depth CLI myself, however, the lack of requirement to use it for deployment, in my opinion, makes the usability easier for more people.

I give this rating as a result of almost 20 years of interfacing with WatchGuard technical support. Of all my vendors that I have to deal with WatchGuard is one of the best I have ever dealt with bar none. I have seldom finished a call to them without a solution. If they by chance don't have the solution, they will figure it out and get back to you ASAP as well as update the casefile online. Technical support is available via phone and web portal. It takes a few minutes to create a case online, assign a priority and submit. They get back to you depending on the critical nature of the issue, but you can expect urgent attention for critical and catastrophic issues.

Online training is good for learning how to use the product. It does not teach security strategy because that is not its intent.

It was not too bad, the key thing we had a problem with was that I was used to using web interfaces or ssh to configure firewall devices and this needed a Windows application if you wanted to access some of the advanced menus. This has improved over the years and a recent refresh of the kit allowed us to mostly use the web interface to get it operational.

Alternatives Considered

Cyberoam

At the time Fortinet wasn't open to changes and ease of use for our type of use case. Since then, the company has come a long way with ease of use of their product. We selected Cyberoam because of its UI and ease of use specifically for CIPA compliance for K-12

WatchGuard Network Security

WatchGuard devices are so much easier to use than SonicWall devices. I find SWs to be obtuse and require a lot of extra clicking/navigating to accomplish the same tasks. The Total Security Suite that is available for WatchGuard is simply unparalleled in a cost-to-features ratio.

Return on Investment

Cyberoam

  • Positive - time and cost savings on management
  • Positive - still best in class for ease of CIPA compliance for K-12
  • Negative - escalating costs are pushing us away from the solution

  • Blocking bad websites has saved many of our clients from any infection which saves time and money from a business being down and needing files restored perspective.
  • Automatic end user training has saved time not having to go onsite to do it ourselves.
  • Traffic and Security Reports that we use with clients to show them employee usage, blocked security threats, and growth projections.
