Watchguard was used as a firewall appliance for our small to medium businesses we provided consulting services for. It was used at the edge of the network to provide basic and next-gen firewall services. We deployed Watchguard at our own offices, as well as our datacenter and in our customer networks.
  • Easy to deploy. Does not require specific CLI knowledge to implement.
  • Traffic analyzer tools.
  • policy based routing with dual WAN can require some fine tuning
  • more in depth CLI for troubleshooting would be a nice to have for when its needed
WatchGuard has a ton of features for a very reasonable price. We utilized it as a simple edge firewall, but also in a more complex environment with dual WAN, policy-based routing, SIP gateway, next-gen features, etc. You would pay a lot more money with some other providers for similar features.

We use WatchGuard devices in our main and satellite office with the network security enabled on both via their Total Security package. They are vital for monitoring traffic coming and going from both sites and ensuring that users are kept safe while doing their jobs and (hopefully) prevent any outages.
  • Feature-rich.
  • Constant development.
  • Great support.
  • Firmware upgrades are currently manual (cant be "set and forget")
  • Takes some learning
  • The web interface still doesnt quite have everything the application offers
I came to my role with WatchGuard already in place and originally planned to drop them and go with another solution. This quickly changed as I learned the features they had, and how it all worked. They have a great feature set and the network security features are phenomenal. We now buy total security suite to ensure we have access to all the various features and, after a little wrangling to get it all enabled and working, it has been a great investment.

Currently, we utilize WatchGuard Network Security as the key component for both of our offices. We also resell and recommend WatchGuard to our clients and support approximately 50-60 deployed scenarios as the solution for network protection and security, through hardware and the integrated security such as DPI, AV, Webblocking and so much more.
  • URL Filtering: Extremely effective for blocking of questionable content and protecting from phishing sites.
  • Antivirus: Our clients have seen far fewer active threats when a WatchGuard Network Security Device is in place.
  • Data Loss Prevention: A valuable tool for our clients who require more security when it comes to metadata and personal data leaving the network.
  • It would be great to have a migration tool to HELP between competitor products to attempt to migrate a configuration so that time and client money is saved when moving into a WatchGuard Network Security deployment.
  • Remote deployment is inconsistent i.e. setting a configuration ahead of time for the device to implement when it powers on and dials home. Would like to see this developed more and with more capability for complexity.
I have and will continue to recommend WatchGuard Network Security to clients large and small. Our business has had no opportunity to say, " You're too small or simple to not benefit from this level of security." WatchGuard has a solution we can confidently offer to even our smallest client with confidence and know we can convey the peace of mind having a WatchGuard Network Security appliance.

We use Watchguard in all our offices in the US. First as a BOVPN network to connect to all resources at are 2 server racks at 2 locations. Then we use it to protect against unwanted access and attacks. We use the virus scanning and webblocker features for this purpose.
  • BOVPN works very well and no drops at all
  • Virus updates are automatic saving IT resources
  • Sometimes unblocking a legitimate web site is hard to figure out why it's being blocked and how to permanently unblock.
The Watchguard appliances are well suited for small 1 location offices up to medium multi office companies. For financial institutions I believe it would be good as a secondary system to a point to point between offices.

We deploy WatchGaurd solutions to many of the customers we manage and monitor, from end to end, for their network infrastructure. The single-pane glass of management via the web portal is a priceless feature, which makes troubleshooting issues a lot easier.
  • Ease of configuration.
  • Ease of deployment.
  • Ease of management.
  • It would nice to have CLI access through the web GUI.
WatchGuard solutions fit into any environment due to all the options of hardware and virtual they provide. No matter how big or how small, you can, with confidence, deploy a WatchGuard solution.

I am using WatchGuard as the firewall to my network. It also manages my VPN. It has made it easy for my users to remote in.
  • Security
  • Spam Blocking
  • Ease of setup
  • Extended support for older boxes
  • I hate having to upgrade every few years
  • Local support
it works well if you have multiple locations and setup a firebox at each location.

WatchGuard has my back!

It is currently being used across the entire organization. We have the reporting feature that is set up. We also have the policies on the firewall set up. The business problem that it addresses is making sure that our network is safe and secure. We have reporting to verify what is happening in our network. Also, it can limit the network bandwidth per user as well as show where users transverse on the network and in the Internet. That way we can do things like be proactive with helping them if they click on the wrong websites that might exploit their computer.
  • Their training is phenomenal.
  • The support for their partners is excellent. One of the best companies that I've been involved with to support us.
  • The product is amazing. I've been a partner with other security companies and by far WatchGuard has excellent technology and it's easy to use. Not only is it easy to use but it makes sense when you configure it.
  • Their customer service team is awesome. I recently have to call in and everyone was very professional and very friendly.
  • The training is great. I know they are updating their training videos. I did like how the networking certification had videos that were broken up and condensed into a smaller video instead of a large one. The wireless training had long videos and if it was broken up it would have been easier.
  • Having the coursework ready for the certification.
  • For the training certifications to have the video easier to rewind 10 seconds back or 15 seconds back. Right now there is no button that allows us to rewind the video in that fashion.
I believe that WatchGuard is really good in scenarios where it is a small or medium-sized business. It does a great job in monitoring wireless security as well as internal network security and external network security.

We use WatchGuard Network Security both internally and for corporate clients. The range of security services, product range, configuration flexibility and ROI makes WatchGuard an outstanding choice.
  • Sufficient product range for SMB through large Gov't / Corporate
  • Easy to configure and maintain, reasonable ongoing subscription costs with flexible support options
  • Product availability - in stock or withing days for delivery
  • Top tier support when you need them.
  • Built in wireless devices have occasionally been problematic (ex T35-W series)
  • # 1 would be the ability to copy a base configuration easily from one device to another (policies)
  • Would like to see technical re write exams elongated, three years currently is just to short - min 5 yr would be reasonable, with all the certifications by other vendors this places undue/un-needed burden on the reseller. demand upkeep webinars instead.
In today's quickly evolving security (risk) environment the need for active, secure firewall management and threat protection is really a must in all corporate and small business environments and WatchGuard has a sufficient product range to suit budget and need. About the only place it may be overkill is home based users, unless WatchGuard comes up with a basic home version under $150 USD.

We are using it currently in our own organization as our primary firewall, wireless, and VPN solution. We are also using them for some of our clients with managed services.
  • Enterprise level security.
  • Price-point accommodating for small to medium-sized businesses.
  • Ability to have integrated 2-factor authentication platform.
  • More traditional-style ACL list for firewall rules.
WatchGuard is very well suited to provide true next-gen quality protection for businesses. We also are using it for some of our high-end residential customers to provide visibility to what is taking place over their network. The downside is that they focus specifically on network-security products and do not have other networking devices (switches/routers/etc).

i3 Business Solutions is a technology managed services and security provider in West Michigan. We are a WatchGuard partner using the WatchGuard Dimension Dashboard to monitor or manage over 100 Fireboxes for our clients. The Dimension Dashboard single pane of glass allows us to improve and tighten cybersecurity for clients in a standardized, consistent, and efficient manner.
  • The WatchGuard Firebox flags and prevents bot attempts on clients' network.
  • The WatchGuard Firebox provides layers of protection using best of breed partners to protect clients perimeter.
  • The WatchGuard Firebox can be centrally managed on a single pane of glass or dashboard allowing for centralized and efficient updating of security profiles.
  • With the proliferation of IoT and VoIP, managing network traffic priority and access can be a challenge due to the WatchGuard Firebox' tight security.
The WatchGuard Firebox is excellent for small to medium-size businesses who are looking for a clean user interface and user-friendly UTM - unified threat management to protect their network perimeter.

We are a reseller and we use it as our first line firewall in all our clients as a security and firewall/router.
  • Very intuitive GUI.
  • Dimension server for managing the client's activities and logs is simple and responsive.
  • WatchGuard support both from a re-seller information perspective and from a technical support perspective. We, as Advanced Office Solutions, feel very well supported.
  • Although Dimension Server is great, it is simple. More reporting, more in-depth capabilities, and functions would be helpful. Added trouble reports that are automated and sent to the support agent as an example.
I feel that based on the suites of products that WatchGuard has that there is really no place that does not fit. Cost may be a catalyst for a smaller client, however, we, even then, recommend the investment as no one business escapes Cyber attacks/ers.

- Multiple SMB's. We recommend, manage, and install security (and other) solutions for businesses throughout Western Canada.
- WatchGuard security addresses the current Canadian Federal Government standards for businesses that handle personal client information.
  • Intrusion Detection: Cloud-based and very responsive. It helps stop malicious activity from getting within the small business Local Area Networks.
  • Intrusion Prevention: TDR is a very advanced prevention system that I have not seen an equivalent for with any other vendor.
  • Dimension-based BoVPN: it's very easy to configure, set up, and monitor.
  • Dimension needs to include features that were available in the Management server!
  • The Access Points need to have the ability to manage from the command line (for instance, in the event of firmware update failure from cloud management).
  • When there is an issue with a Firebox update, better communication of that issue would be appreciated (i.e. v12.4 had some issues with Policies not working properly, and we only found this out when experiencing the issue and opening a Case for it).
The configurations required for heavily filtered environments are vastly more complex than for the configurations (in the same environment) for untangling NG. Except for those environments, there are no other scenarios that it would not be suited for.

Our WatchGuard firewall is our trusted barrier between us and the outside world. I like the features that help keep us safe from ransomware. The webpage blocking features are nice to keep people from downloading from untrusted sites but those sites can be added to the whitelist. I really like the VPN features, and they allow me to add VPN users with ease.
  • Security
  • VPN tools
  • Ransom ware protection
  • Interface
For our office, it is a great solution providing the security of a full-time robust firewall without having to sign up with a company to host or monitor it all the time. Being a smaller office, we don't have a full-time security staff and WatchGuard gives us the security of a full-time staff.

We use it as our go to for firewall protection at our company and across 99% of our clients. This addresses network security.
  • WatchGuard uses best in breed for their services, which means they do not try to reinvent something that a company is already doing well... they partner with them.
  • Geo location blocking works great.
  • Easy to install and setup.
  • The only con I see may be something getting blocked when you have a policy in place to allow it.
  • WatchGaurd, by default, blocks unless allowed by a policy. This is good, but you just need to educate users and techs to know what they are looking for.
We have been using them for 5+ years and still love their product.

We are a partner with WatchGuard because we have used other solutions in the past and have settled on what we consider to be the best security appliance on the market. WatchGuard helps business owners not only manage their network but also manage their employee usage making for a more profitable environment.
  • First and foremost would be the UTM throughput meaning with the correct sized appliance (user count & Bandwidth requirements). This appliance will not throttle its users.
  • So many layers of defense to keep our clients safe from all the garbage the world has to offer.
  • Ease of use. Compared to other solutions, WatchGuard Network Security is the easiest to program and install.
  • WatchGuard is always looking into the future with added features like TDR for the Total Security Suite and other solutions like Secure WiFi and MFA.
  • Currently I can't think of anything that needs correcting. What I would hope for and I believe they are already looking into, is Fiber. Fiber is becoming more and more common.
  • In the past sizing the correct appliance was simply getting a "User" count the appliance would be dealing with as internet speeds were generally low (10Mbps - 80Mbps on average). Now with Fiber, I can have a small office (5-15 users) which normally would be a FireBox t35(w) but their internet fiber speed may be 500Mbps. Currently, the T35 would throttle them, so a small office would have to go with a minimum of T55/T70. I'm hoping as Fiber becomes more and more common so do the UTM throughput of the smaller appliances increases as well.
  • The heavy-duty T35R maybe coming out with a wireless model?
About the only reason I can think of where a security suite would not be needed are those extremely small businesses like storage facilities who's business do not rely on internet. Every other type of business needs to protect themselves with a minimum of basic security. Places like hospitals, doctors offices, dental, chiropractic offices or anyone else who handles patient data per HIPAA compliance should be using every tool at their disposal to protect their patients' data and the best way to do that is with WatchGuard Network Security.

WatchGuard Network Security is used by our organization to secure the network perimeter. It's also used as a Zero Trust tool to limit both internal and external access to required resources by using ACLs, policies, etc.
It's used by our entire organization, and we use the full suite of next generation security, including Intrusion Prevention, Gateway and Intelligent AV, Data Loss Prevention (compliance for PCI & HIPAA), Threat Detection and Response, Web-blocker/content filter, etc.
  • Very easy to manage compared to competing products
  • Relatively simple to troubleshoot
  • Device factory resets if you downgrade firmware (must have config backups)
For most businesses in the 1 - 1,000 employee range, WatchGuard Network Security is a great tool. When compared to competing products (we've used Cisco ASA, Cisco Meraki, SonicWall, Sophos, and others) none can compare for simplicity of configuration and deployment--but simple does not mean worse. It is every much as powerful and feature-rich.

Currently, we deploy WatchGuard Network security devices in order to help secure both the external and internal perimeter of our customer's networks. The appliances offer many modern features such as Advanced Thread Protection (ATP), Spam / Antivirus, Website blocking / reporting and VPN services. The firewalls can also act as a wireless controller for the WatchGuard wireless access points. We have successfully deploy several of these with great success.
  • Website blocking works as well as any other option on the market.
  • ATP seems to identify a lot of threats that get past our spam filter or local Antivirus.
  • The spam and Antivirus services seems to identify a lot of threats that get past our spam filter or local Antivirus.
  • Considering the high cost of the wireless controller, having it come free with an application is a great value
  • The hardware is enterprise-class, rarely do we have hardware related issues.
  • The support is typically fast to respond and will not keep you for hours doing mundane troubleshooting.
  • Costly, the devices are rarely expensive, especially for the additional security bundles
  • There is no way to enforce password requirements for user accounts on the appliances.
  • the support is handled over sears, but this is not uncommon in the industry.
If a customer needs to set up a wide area network, WatchGuard security appliances can help filter the traffic and more importantly enforce access lists. At a larger scale, WatchGuard provides management server software that can facilitate the managing of 100s-1000s of devices.

If a customer needs a good quality Internet firewall, I would always suggest WatchGuard. With their subscription model, the solution can be tailored to fit the specific needs of the customer.

We deployed WatchGuard Network Security to many of our customers to better protect their perimeter network. It allows better visibility and greater security.
  • WatchGuard Cloud is great. It allows visibility into the things happening on the network.
  • WatchGuard is growing and adding new services all the time.
  • WatchGuard allows us to provide granular access based on users.
  • WatchGuard is a great security appliance, but lacks in the routing and network department.
  • Sometimes when we see threats it can take a while to truly understand whether they are a false positive or a true threat.
  • Support has been lacking lately.
WatchGuard is expensive. We recommend WatchGuard in all scenarios where a customer values their security. Many small companies do not value this.

It is used across the organization at various locations as a security layer and for branch connectivity. It addresses compliance and data security as well as providing secure, easily configured and managed connectivity solutions for all of our users at various locations.
  • Their configuration and management interfaces are very user-friendly.
  • Their support is top notch in response, knowledge, and availability.
  • They have an extensive knowledgebase that enables users to find the answers to most issues themselves.
  • I honestly can't think of any.
It is well suited for small to mid-sized organizations with budget concerns that need security devices that are able to provide various services and functions, such as IDS/IPS, traffic shaping, virus protection, firewalling, VPN, and spam-blocking.

As a reseller of the product, I have many clients using various Watchguard products including schools, businesses, non-profit organizations, etc. We use the units for branch office VPN tunnel connections, geolocation to prevent workstations from going to sites in various other countries they shouldn't be going to. The proxy services are very strong and useful. Web blocker features are also particularly useful to prevent users from going to unauthorized categorized sites.
  • Watchguard equipment is easily configured via a native app or a built-in Web-browser.
  • Their technical support is very helpful when needed.
  • Branch office VPN tunnels can be configured and forgotten. The tunnels always reestablish after reboots with no fuss.
  • Many choices for VPN including IPSEC, their own proprietary SSLVPN client, and L2TP, which allows for various client types connecting to the corporate network as needed.
  • The pricing of the "optional" security features should be looked at more closely. In some cases, long-time small business clients that have been using Watchguard seem to be getting priced out of the products due to the high costs of the Total Security Defense packages.
Branch office VPN Tunneling for bridging remote offices seems to be a very strong component of the units. Reputation Enabled Defense is of great use. We are impressed with the overall reliability of the units.

We use Watchguard Total Security Solution in our office. It provides our network with perimeter security that is always constant and vigilant in keeping intruders out of our network. We don't have to worry about the perimeter- and are always protected. The fact that it is a subscription service and always updated, means that we do not have to worry about threats we don't know about - Watchguard does it for us and keeps us safe.
  • We love the wifi security that keeps our wireless access points secure. Having an office in close proximity to other networks means that we have to be vigilant about our wireless security. With Watchguard our access points are safe.
  • We love the artificial intelligence that Watchguard uses to protect the perimeter of our network from malware and viruses. We don't have just an appliance, we have a constantly updated device that protects us from threats as they appear.
  • We love the anti Spam filter which has reduced the amount of spam we receive by over 90 %.
  • Getting the subscriptions deployed can be cumbersome. There are lots of options to select from and it would be helpful to have an easy to use implementation menu.
  • Sometimes too much of a good thing is too much. We have a lot of information coming over Dimension and it would be nice to have a Watchguard hosted server.
  • Training is significant and our legacy technicians have been overwhelmed by the amount of information that they have to be adept at.
If a client is looking for an appliance just to check a box and say, "I'm done", then Watchguard is not the solution for them. If they don't value security enough or are unaware of the dynamic dangers out there, they are going to shop purely based on price from an online vendor. If they are purely name-conscious, they are going to look at other vendors and overlook Watchguard.

If a client has an understanding of both the dynamic nature of the threats and understands that Watchguard incorporates the best in class components in the Total Security package - they will realize that Watchguard represents the best value.

We use it in our own company and we recommend WatchGuard to other businesses to help protect their network infrastructure.
  • Gateway Antivirus works well.
  • Web filtering helps prevent users from going sites they shouldn't be visiting.
  • SSL VPN works great and secure.
  • Routine visit from our WatchGuard rep at least twice a year.
  • Not having to take two tests for two people every two years to stay at the Gold Level. One test each after meeting Gold status should be sufficient.
  • Highly recommend taking the online test for staying at Gold level instead of going to a testing center. Like a continuing education course and an online test.
Well suited for small businesses except the cost of the Basic Security Suite is becoming a deterrent for the better security because of the cost point for small business.

We utilize WatchGuard equipment and their Security Suites in our main office, as well as deploying it on-site for all of our IT customers. Our primary role is working with criminal justice agencies, and WatchGuard products serve many of the appropriate needs. Their firewalls are FIPS 140-2 compliant and offer a full range of services that will maintain compliance with federal CJIS and state policies regarding the access and transmission of criminal justice information (CJI).

Their assortment of proxy policies and security services ensure that our criminal justice networks are safe, secure, and controlled. They utilize multiple layers of threat detection to protect their critical/sensitive data. And with many criminal justice networks requiring two-factor authentication for mobile devices, WatchGuard now offers their integrated AuthPoint service, which can easily provide this service to agencies without requiring them to invest in third-party tokens/services to make it happen.
  • WatchGuard AuthPoint allows CJIS-compliant MFA for mobile devices.
  • Layered security services can easily block threats from several different angles.
  • Easy-to-use system manager makes building policies and interpreting them very easy.
  • WatchGuard Cloud features have room to grow. I would love to see it fully replace the need for Dimension or WatchGuard Server Manager.
  • AuthPoint support for third-party tokens (for agencies that already own them) would be a nice addition.
WatchGuard Security Services are very well-suited for our customer environments (criminal justice networks). They're very easy to centrally manage (we have about 45 that we handle). It would, perhaps, be less well-suited for very small environments. Although WatchGuard does provide smaller/less-expensive units, they may be overkill for very small environments or those that do not have to be concerned with regulatory needs.

As a network security architect, it is my job to design NIST SP-800 cybersecurity framework hardened network layer security solutions. These strategies are combined with a comprehensive cybersecurity kill chain plan inclusive of email, network, phone, printer, cloud, server, and endpoint layered defense strategies. As part of the design decision, technologies that consistently have extremely high efficacy while having a low TCO are absolutely essential for this solution to be manageable, effective, and affordable. WatchGuard has been our choice for network layer protection for more than 10 years. We also use their endpoint protection agent technologies and authentication solutions. In doing so, we have been able to deliver high levels of security effectiveness at an affordable price to organizations ranging from one user to 500 users.
  • WatchGuard System Manager and centralized management is the key to low TCO
  • Security solution efficacy is critical. A solution that is only 95% effective is not good enough.
  • Partner support is good and enables us to be able to deliver quality solutions that are consistently functional
  • Partner enablement. WG focuses on the channel as they know that the skill of the integrators is what makes the difference between a default appliance and an effective security solution
  • Partner communications on technical issues. For example the undocumented feature of SDWAN hidden route. There is still no documentation on that.
  • Too infrequent communications about high incidence technical support issues. We do not want to have to be encountering known issues and then having outages or problems that we then have to put in tickets about.
  • Pay attention to your most highly technical partners, not just those that sell a lot of equipment. The highly technical partners can and do provide very usable feedback that can make the products better.
  • WG wants partners to build relationships with people inside WG so we can drive solutions to problems, but too frequently, we get no response to emails sent to the proper internal resources about legitimate issues.
I do not recommend Fireboxes for network layer security in a situation where you cannot run a Firebox as the core network router for all subnets/VLANs because the network is simply too large to be accommodated on a single Firebox appliance. In that case of a network that is too large, I run a network layer security solution on every single Extreme switch in an environment and possibly also at the WAP layer. The Extreme solution is not as good or as flexible, but it does scale larger. The Extreme solution is also too expensive for any environment of less than 500 users. This statement would also be true of any Cisco, Checkpoint, Aruba, or HPE Networking solution. All of those solutions have a very high cost of implementation and maintenance, but they do scale to the size of 10,000+ endpoints.
