WatchGuard Network Security at a Small Business
Overall Satisfaction with WatchGuard Network Security
We use this as our onsite firewall and for local network management as well as VPN for offsite employees.
Pros
- Network setup and VLAN management.
- Easy integration with other network equipment.
- All the security features we need for access control and defense.
Cons
- Better integration with VoIP services, such as templates for policies handling traffic for Bria or Asterisk endponts and servers.
- Get webblocker to work without breaking secure websites.
- Lower cost on endpoint agents for antivirus and include application control and webblocker with the agents.
- Make the cost per endpoint with TDR and Netowrk access control lower than the cost of Antivirus licensing that is not integrated.
- Make it easier to set up network access control and VLAN assignment by device, perhaps with templates.
- Get webblocker and application control working with QUIC.
- This has saved money be preventing downtime from security issues.
- It is far less expensive than farming out to an MSP. Easily in the lower 25% of costs and has all major features needed.
CDW helps us get the licensing. This works fine, although it is a bit clumsy getting the correct product ID for a tradeup, or product recommendations. First you need to go over the documentation on WatchGuard Network Security without logging into the site so you can see product comparisons, then find out about trade-up deals, then contact the partner to arrange the purchase.
There is value, although we still end up handling endpoint security with other vendors due to lack of an exact fit for all situations or endponts and the pricing.
WatchGuard Cloud was cumbersome and slow to access. When the Internet is out, cloud tools are not available. Cloud management of Wi-Fi was not desirable and the lack of opt-out as well as the high price compared to an off-the-shelf Wi-Fi router led to dropping the WatchGuard APs. We instead use local management with WSM and just left the old APs online for a guest network.
Possibly a retail store or large office building might prefer the new APs and cloud management. We are a small office, so it was mostly a source of privacy concerns plus increased cost plus lack of benefit compared with an ethernet port.

Too costly to transition compared with renewal of WatchGuard Network Security, no demand for the stacked switch options, reduced network footprint after COVID lockdown.
