Dell Boomi

Dell Boomi is well suited for integrating between ERP systems, especially Netsuite, SAP, Salesforce. Built in access to platform API, Auth to API, access to data or triggers/actions, etc. speeds delivery. There are many connectors available making this process faster. It is best suited to an organization that needs to rapidly roll out new integrations or changes on a regular basis. It's less well suited when larges amounts of data need to be processed very quickly in a parallel method. It's possible to handle things in parallel, but because of the workflow connectors and design process you are much more likely to build something that is handling one record at a time sequentially instead of building a process that is processing hundreds of records simultaneously for real time processing. It's also less well suited where complex code is the common path for integration as it does not connect to source control and common software development processes for managing code/test/deploy. (Those things can be used, but it requires additional effort to manage.)

SSIS

  • SSIS is particularly well suited for jobs that need to be consistent, repeatable, and error managed.
  • Ongoing extract, transform, load [ETL] jobs that are scheduled or manual.
  • One-time ETL with complex datasets.
  • Migrations of large datasets.
SSIS is not well suited for small or simple datasets that can be copied or exported safely to flat files for import. It is possible to do this but would generally take longer to build in SSIS unless there was a good reason to .remove manual handling of the data in transport or the action needed to be testable/repeatable.

Pros

Dell Boomi

  • Pre-built connectors to almost anything which greatly reduce time to release of your integration needs.
  • Easy to use development platform with drag&drop features. Non-technical people could build simple integration processes in no time.
  • Great user community where you can get quick help if needed. Boomi people hang around there a lot.

SSIS

  • SSIS works very well pulling well-defined data into SQL Server from a wide variety of data sources.
  • It comes free with the SQL Server so it is hard not to consider using it providing you have a team who is trained and experienced using SSIS.
  • When SSIS doesn't have exactly what you need you can use C# or VBA to extend its functionality.

Cons

Dell Boomi

  • The dashboards are limited
  • Running Low latency improves performance but makes resolving issues very difficult
  • Unable to sign up for alerts for one process only. Alerts go out at an account level. If you want to get notifications for a process you need to build it into your application.
  • The folder structure of components can get messy if not well governed.
  • Easy to create duplicate components and not realizing that someone else in your company already created one.
  • Scripting could be improved. You don't know if you have errors in your code until you run the process.

SSIS

  • SSIS memory usage can be quite high particularly when SSI and SQL server are on the same machine
  • SSIS is not available on any environment other than Microsoft Windows
  • SSIS does not function with any database engine back-end other than Microsoft SQL Server

Dell Boomi has provided us with the ability to connect our campus together using our various existing platforms. There are many supported features and have yet to run into something that we cannot do. Its user interface is very intuitive which would allow users to begin developing fairly easily. There is a myriad of resources available

Some features should be revised or improved, some tools (using it with Visual Studio) of the toolbox should be less schematic and somewhat more flexible. Using for example, the CSV data import is still very old-fashioned and if the data format changes it requires a bit of manual labor to accept the new data structure

My IT and Finance teams have noted that setting up the tool is a breeze. Dell Boomi has never caused an issue during a system implementation that I am aware of. We are pleased with the tool and recommend others consider it.

If you use any of the Microsoft tools, it is easy to get using and understand since it uses Visual Studio and SSMS to work with. There are extensions you can get and some of those can be difficult to work with but usually they slide in nicely. The one thing to understand though is there is some installation and configuration on the SQL Server side that can take some time.

The atom sphere takes a time to load, when I open a process or when I open a log. One more slow processing is when I import objects from NetSuite.
About the performance of processing, it looks like Boomi takes a time to initialize some things such as connectors before starting the process. This is also performance we have.

You can, of course, accidentally make sloppy code or workflows but it’s not a tools issue if you run packages in an inefficient way. With a company of our size, we never had any performance issues but I can imagine for larger companies that this will have a greater focus.

Boomi support was responsive and knowledgable, however being a closed cloud service, it doesn't have good community support. We found the learning curve to be steep and there aren't avenues like google, forums, or blogs that provide community driven insight into the product or how to go about designing solutions using the tool

The support, when necessary, is excellent. But beyond that, it is very rarely necessary because the user community is so large, vibrant and knowledgable, a simple Google query or forum question can answer almost everything you want to know. You can also get prewritten script tasks with a variety of functionality that saves a lot of time.

The implementation may be different in each case, it is important to properly analyze all the existing infrastructure to understand the kind of work needed, the type of software used and the compatibility between these, the features that you want to exploit, to understand what is possible and which ones require integration with third-party tools

Alternatives Considered

Dell Boomi

Our team has used Actian DataConnect since the Mid 1990's. It was formerly known as Data Junction and then Pervasive Data Integrator. We looked at Boomi as an additional tool to aid in our Integrations. We did compare it to Informatica and thought it was a better fit for our customers.

We have been using Boomi and doing great. I like the way we can break down data into small units of work. It simplifies how to handle multi-conditional pathing and the unit of work level.

Currently, I am working at SFCG, using various tools to build integrations into Oracle CX products. When we started kicking the tires on Boomi and in the training and development since that time, I've tried a series of processes out that have given me trouble in other tools. Below is a brief recap of my experience and growing admiration for the way in which this tool has made my job easier.

My first goal with using Boomi was to connect to an instance of CRM On-Demand (a task that can on other platforms be a time-consuming endeavor). What I found was a useful wizard, pictured below, with a series of pop-up steps to follow.
In other tools, I have spent more time in trying to define the schemas, than actually completing the maps that use them. Boomi reduced that time from my process. This is one small example of many demonstrating how my teammates and I feel as if we were working in black and white and are now working in color with Boomi AtomSphere. Tasks I've taken for granted are complex, time-consuming and meticulous are simplified, streamlined and transformed with powerful features like Boomi Suggest - a handy feature that leverages the collective intelligence of the Boomi community to suggest which fields should be mapped in a Data Map.

You don't need to take my word for it, another member of our team, Li Mo started building out an integration to Oracle Sales Cloud, using the SOAP API Connector. He was able to do a complete integration to insert a record into the Account entity, and it took about an hour and a half.

Note: it had been about 1 month since we both actually took the training courses. I believe we choose an additional tool that plays to the inner strengths of working in the cloud, and I can not wait until I start full blown to continue development on new integration projects using Dell Boomi AtomSphere.

Recommendations to other buyers: Try it to see if it fits your needs.

SSIS

Look for where you are going to load the data and from where are you extracting it. A lot of those who sell you the DB already have tools for ETL. I have heard good things at an enterprise level from great colleagues about Informatica, but honestly, I prefer SSIS.Although I did like TIBCO Jaspersoft and it can be mixed with TIBCO Spotfire for data analysis. If your ERP is SAP, then you must keep in mind using SAP BusinessObjects. As for free tools, and if you have a great and constant team of scripting (Perl, Python) engineers, then you can think about going open source.

Return on Investment

Dell Boomi

  • It has allowed us to scale significantly without having to add headcount, specifically those geared towards data entry. We went from a $10m ARR business to $200m ARR business with the same amount of Order Processors and 12x amount of transactions by leveraging Boomi to perform a lot of the work, and then having the Order Processing team to simply review that the transaction was processed successfully.

SSIS

  • I use SSIS to automate tasks that I'm repeatedly asked to do. "Hey, can you go into the system and close any open orders that we've fully filled?" Sure....then I schedule a package to do that for me every hour so I'm never asked again. It saves me time, which gives value to the company.
  • It removes the risk of human error. When people build files and send them, there's the risk that it doesn't happen the same way every time or gets forgotten. With SSIS, you spend some up front time building a process, but then you deploy it and forget it (unless it emails you that there was an error. You are putting error handling in your ETL, right?). Very repeatable and consistent business solution.
