Denodo

Donodo is very well suited for large organizations with siloed datasets. Denodo thrives in these environments, since large organizations can afford the licensing costs, and are always tasked to mash up data from multiple environments throughout the organization.

Tableau Server

Tableau Server is extremely well suited for a company with a few dedicated analysts creating dashboards and reports for a few stakeholders. It is also great at handling a large amount of report viewers, but it is more expensive because you have to pay for each user.

Pros

Denodo

  • Database Agnostic: You can easily connect to different environments and mash up data sets.
  • The "magic" of data virtualization: No data is created, so data is reported in near-real-time to end users.
  • It's easy to use UI for developers. You just connect to a data source, create tables, and join them to other datasets.

Tableau Server

  • Allows for easy sharing of data and actionable insights with an extremely user-friendly visual interface
  • Acts as an environment to implement and enforce data governance with centralized and certified data sources
  • Easy to deploy, scale to our specific needs, and monitor

Cons

Denodo

  • Lack of Documentation and user community: Denodo continues to have a small community of super users, therefore there is not a lot of documentation out there in the event you get stuck.
  • Cost: Data virtualization isn't cheap, so smaller organizations might shy away from this technology due to the high licensing costs.
  • Caching strategy: Some slower datasets will require caching... which argues, why not just do traditional ETL if you need to do this?

Tableau Server

  • Content Discovery can be challenging. Unless users have security to data sources or dashboards, they often don't know they are there.
  • Tableau Server doesn't natively support the ability to send PDF versions of dashboards to users that aren't Tableau Server users. An open source project was developed called VizAlerts that provides a workaround for this, but it should really just be built into the product.
  • There are no phone numbers to call if you need support. The only way to contact Tableau Support is via email. If we have an urgent problem we typically need to reach out to our account executive to get appropriate attention.

Denodo is very easy to use. It has a user-friendly drag and drop interface. I'm not a fan of the java platform it resides on.

While Tableau has the highest ease of use for analysis, the data set has to be ready for that and Tableau hasn't (yet) brought that ease of use to the ETL process.

I use Tableau for one to several hours per day, every day, and it almost never crashes. It's the most reliable piece of production software I've used.

Performance

Denodo is a tool to rapidly mash data sources together and create meaningful datasets. It does have its downfalls though. When you create larger, more complex datasets, you will most likely need to cache your datasets, regardless of how proper your joins are set up. Since DV takes data from multiple environments, you are taxing the corporate network, so you need to be conscious of how much data you are sending through the network and truly understand how and when to join datasets due to this.

While there are definitely cases where a user can do things that will make a particular worksheet or dashboard run slowly, overall the performance is extremely fast. The user experience of exploratory analysis particularly shines, there's nothing out there with the polish of Tableau.

I think the folks that work in support are generally pretty good at what they do (when you get them on a WebEx). But the process of reporting issues to them and waiting for a response (via email only) is a hassle. I never understood why you can't just call them up and discuss the issues with them. It would take a handful of email exchanges before they would agree to a WebEx session. That was frustrating.

In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

The sales consultants do an amazing job of introducing the tool and its capabilities. They are also helpful in explaining the layout of the desktop client and its different functionality.Keep in mind that they use a sample data source (MS Excel) with a very small amount of data to show off what it can do. What you have to remember is that you are buying the tool so that you can connect to large amounts of data (and possibly blend data together from different databases).

We got it working which was the main goal, but we had to create a workaround for a key dashboard that would run 24/7. In order for the view to refresh every X minutes with the updated data, we created a .html file that instructed to the browser to refresh itself every X minutes. This was a pretty simple workaround but it was something we were hoping to avoid.

Alternatives Considered

Denodo

We evaluated other data virtualization platforms such as Cisco Composite. We found that Composite had an even smaller community and less support than Denodo. Denodo is putting a lot of the revenue earned from licensing costs to grow the product, and we did not get that vibe from Composite.

Return on Investment

Denodo

  • Positive ROI for one client who was paying too much for an existing legacy reporting platform that hasn't been updated in decades.
  • Positive ROI for another client that didn't have any traditional BI tools.
  • A positive experience for end users who can now run a report using multiple data sources in near real time.

  • Tableau is costly but I will say this: You get what you pay for when it comes to Tableau, Tableau Desktop and other Tableau products. I haven't been disappointed with anything Tableau has done or has to offer.
