Denodo

Donodo is very well suited for large organizations with siloed datasets. Denodo thrives in these environments, since large organizations can afford the licensing costs, and are always tasked to mash up data from multiple environments throughout the organization.

TIBCO Data Virtualization

Well suited to read data from Excel files, although to set up an efficient and error-proof process it requires you to create a foundation and that is quite time consuming, but once it's there, it works well.Solution is structured nicely in a folder hierarchy.Less apppropriate when you need to add a lot of business logic to the data, if you need to enrich the data. Such logic is hard to implement and slows down a lot.Less appropriate for creating real-time insights, caching or storing on database is almost always required to get good performance.

Pros

Denodo

  • Flat learning curve.
  • Does not need brilliant developers.
  • Less need for custom denodo wrappers, even if needed is not very complex.
  • Denodo stored procedures and functions helped address complex, not straightforward requirements.
  • Export/import deployment between environments was very helpful.

TIBCO Data Virtualization

  • Rich data connectivity and intelligent analysis to discover explicit and implicit relations between data in various sources.
  • Intelligent and rich query optimization algorithms to minimize pressure on source systems and make use of the performance enhancements capabilities of the source systems.
  • There is one version of the TDV- tool that holds all functionality. No additional licenses needed, everything is included.
  • MPP-functionality (TDV 8.0.0) makes automatic query distribution over large (big data) clusters possible and guarantees very high performance with querying 100's of millions of rows.
  • The TDV Studio application combines the use of ANSI-SQL (you can script for more complex tasks) with a graphical user interface for modeling the data layers, both supporting fast development of data and web services. TDV Server is a complete package with all the enterprise grade functionality an organization may need.

Cons

Denodo

  • Lack of Documentation and user community: Denodo continues to have a small community of super users, therefore there is not a lot of documentation out there in the event you get stuck.
  • Cost: Data virtualization isn't cheap, so smaller organizations might shy away from this technology due to the high licensing costs.
  • Caching strategy: Some slower datasets will require caching... which argues, why not just do traditional ETL if you need to do this?

TIBCO Data Virtualization

  • It is versatile but it also makes it quite complex if you haven't already thought it out fully before you start writing the views.
  • Performance is highly dependent on queries used

Denodo is very easy to use. It has a user-friendly drag and drop interface. I'm not a fan of the java platform it resides on.

It has a drag-and-drop feature and a good list of data adapters which makes it easy to thread across elements of various data sources.

Denodo is a tool to rapidly mash data sources together and create meaningful datasets. It does have its downfalls though. When you create larger, more complex datasets, you will most likely need to cache your datasets, regardless of how proper your joins are set up. Since DV takes data from multiple environments, you are taxing the corporate network, so you need to be conscious of how much data you are sending through the network and truly understand how and when to join datasets due to this.

They have very good customer support; their response is quick. Whenever I raise a support ticket they are quick enough to respond to our ticket and resolve the issue.

Alternatives Considered

Denodo

I did not use any other data virtualization platform. BizTalk is not the right comparison; it is an integration layer and for orchestration; do not use denodo as an orchestration layer, it is not for connecting upstreams to downstreams and orchestrate data flows, it is primarily for pulling information and presenting in a fashion that benefit the audience

TIBCO Data Virtualization

TIBCO/Composite Data Virtualization tool competes against Denodo and Red Hat data virtualization tools. While they have comparable features. The TIBCO product is stronger as far as performance and scalability. Denodo was superior when it comes to metadata capabilities, as well forward-engineering and reverse-engineering using data modeling tools such as ERwin or Sybase PowerDesigner.

Return on Investment

Denodo

  • Improved time-to-market. We addressed new requirements in less than 2 person days.
  • Very agile. Easy to handle changing requirements. Like a new requirement, a change in requirement was not expensive either.
  • Platform issues were difficult to diagnose and debug.
