HCL Domino

Domino is secure by comparison, due in part by it's lower market share, but also it's native encryption capability. Domino is stable. With fewer changes and revisions, Domino performance can be relied upon with existing infrastructure. Despite its clunky admin console, administration as a whole is easier and more intuitive. The native Domino application language is either Java or LotusScript. Finding developers for the latter application can be troublesome.

GraalVM

If you want to have a cool VM, don't spend too much memory and mainly being multilanguage go ahead.Be aware there are some points that can be improved like a couple of languages are not accepted so far.Like used to, it's easy to use and you can find a lot of information regarding the tool so if you need to do something fast, it's a good choice.

Cons

HCL Domino

  • I am not a fan of the Domino ID for authentication purposes. Some Admins appreciate this feature, but ID aging, updating and management issues are burdensome.
  • Integrations with current available software applications as a result of lower Domino adoption rates.
  • Administration tools are somewhat dated and clunky. Even with updates and patches, the Domino administrator console hasn't changed in years.

GraalVM

  • It should be possible to use GraalVM EE to distribute native images of JavaFX applications for mobile platforms, especially for Apple platforms.
  • Native Images are a game changer. However, compiling complex applications can be a pain. Better support for an improved transition process are a must.

GraalVM

GraalVM 7.3
Based on 26 answers
The support we received when porting legacy applications from the GraalVM team and community was commendable. We were able to get assistance in introducing alternatives for the libraries we were using where appropriate. GraalVM support was also able to help us with some configuration options we were stuck with for configuring deployment environments on AWS compute.

Alternatives Considered

HCL Domino

Having administered Domino right out of tech school I have very limited experience with other platforms. Realizing that Exchange is the de facto solution used by the rest of the universe, and now O365\Azure to eliminate on-prem data centers the future of direct platform administration is numbered. I lack the experience to usefully comment on or compare other products.

GraalVM

Although, GraalVM supports Polygot architecture and it has all features to create a poweful application which deliver high performance and takes care of scalability. GraalVM also consists of a unique architecture for monolith application. It simplifies the runtime architecture and coordination. Easy to debug any issues and very handy to Java Developers.

Return on Investment

HCL Domino

  • The immediate impact on my organization as a non-profit is cost. Enterprise pricing for a Domino solution is exponentially more inexpensive than more popular applications.
  • Of the most obvious impacts is user familiarity. Given a vast majority of the employment pool having familiarity with MS products, orienting new employees to Domino\Notes is burdensome. Adoption is slow and resistance is high.
  • Hiring Domino administrators and developers is increasingly challenging.
  • The recent sale of the Domino platform away from IBM is concerning.

GraalVM

  • Financial: Increased Java container count on the same hardware.
  • Performance: Decreased cold start time for container startup.
  • Training: Adopting GraalVM has a learning curve. This requires investment in time and resources. The benefits come through re-evaluating our current deployments for optimization.
