Overall Satisfaction with HCL Domino

We've been using Domino for the past 23 years. It's the platform upon which our entire ERP systems are based. We also use it for our CRM, sales funnel, Document Management systems, meeting scheduling and reporting, employee file maintenance (including training and development), procurement & supplier management, risk management, preventive maintenance, internal audits, customer management, and project management.

Pros

  • Amazingly stable - reliability is incredible.
  • Outstanding security for managing all information.
  • The ability to replicate databases for offline use is excellent.
  • Application development is fairly simple.

Cons

  • Domino languished for a decade with previous ownership.
  • UI is outdated.
  • Difficult to find knowledgeable developers for Domino.
  • Doesn't easily integrate with other enterprise applications.
  • We were able to automate many of our manual processes, reducing the average worker's administrative workload by roughly 55%.
  • Executive managers were able to reduce their administrative workload by over 95%.
  • Annual external audits that used to require many days now take a couple of hours, translating into savings of many thousands of dollars annually.
  • Our payback period was under 4 months.
The UI is somewhat dated, and the email experience is not at all like Outlook, but we love the versatility and functionality of Domino. I would absolutely hate to give it up for anything else. We've tried to replicate some of Domino's functionality in SharePoint and found that Domino is considerably better.
Domino has far superior cybersecurity out of the box. We can set the level of security we want for the entire business, and it works in the background, unlike SharePoint and Workspace. Building applications and workflows in Domino is also considerably easier than alternatives, often requiring minutes/hours rather than days/weeks.

If you're looking for a high-security environment, then Domino is great. The built-in cybersecurity features are seamless, unlike those in the Microsoft or Google environments. Large databases are easily managed, and Domino enables us to automate many of our business workflows. It's easier to use than Microsoft PowerApps, for example. It doesn't integrate easily with other systems, which can be problematic at times. And because of the long-term lack of support from when IBM owned it, the user community has dwindled somewhat, making it hard to reach out for help.
