Kahoot!

When teaching fifth grade, students enjoyed reviewing content covered in class by playing classic Kahoot games. As the site has evolved, teachers are now able to present lessons within Kahoot and use the same platform to review the content presented. Students do not have to changes sites mid-lesson. It is a game-changer.

Quizlet

Quizlet works extremely well for students of all ages to study not only vocabulary but all types of academics. I have used it not only as a teacher to provide for my students, but I use Quizlet myself when studying or learning something new. The ease of access with it being online, at your phone, or wherever you go highly surpasses traditional flashcards.

Pros

Kahoot!

  • Useful for either, in-person or online classes: it can work from a projector or screen in in-person classes, or by sharing the screen in online classes.
  • Excellent to get an idea of the understanding or knowledge level of a group of people: depending on the intention of the game, the professor or person in charge of it can make and change the questions to address certain points.
  • Easy to use for both professors and students: Kahoot is intuitive, simple, and fun to use.
  • Interactive and engaging: Kahoot is a game designed to work as a tool for professors, which makes it perfect to use with students.

Cons

Kahoot!

  • It requires access to technology (students smartphones, iPads, etc.)
  • It would be easier if we could program the Kahoot ID into our presentations ahead of time. You have to activate it right before you start using it so there is always a moment's delay as we get organized before the students access it.
  • If you use it often enough you'll hear the music that plays during the game in your head even outside of the classroom.

Quizlet

  • Broader colorscape to appeal to younger users.
  • Free educator accounts/educator discount.
  • Allowing for younger users to create accounts without parent approval.

I give this a rating of 6.5 because we encountered technical glitches (temporary) where our screens were stuck due to an issue with the creator's app. The game went on but the points and rankings were scattered all over the place. It took a good number of questions for the points and rankings to come back. Again, there is the need of both laptop and mobile and questions and answers, which is a headache.

Support Rating

Kahoot! 8.7

Sizeable community of teachers using this tool means you can typically search and find effective practices and pitfalls to avoid. Documentation and guides from Kahoot! are also solid, but you are likely to find a fellow teacher in your own building or office suite that has experience and is willing to come alongside as you begin using the tool. This for me is a significant selling point regarding support.

Alternatives Considered

Kahoot!

Blue Canoe includes games to provide users more means to learn the language in a different way. This program marks each day and sets goals for users to improve participation and engagements. However, it does not have an interface that students and teachers can both work together for the same game. Kahoot! provides more features for educators and all users to increase interaction in class and at home. Moreover, there is no cost to use Kahoot! for the basic plan which covers most features.

Quizlet

Quizlet is better because it allows students to go at their own pace and study independently. It is much easier to navigate as a teacher and as a student. Quizzizz can be more fun since it acts more like a game, but Quizlet is much more accessible for all learners with various modalities
