MariaDB

Our installation scenario is a MariaDB cluster composed of 3 nodes to achieve high availability in the service and in this way the application that accesses the backend (MariaDB) is always working and is not down at any time.
To achieve high performance of the application when accessing the database, a MariaDB MaxScale has been mounted that acts as a proxy for queries to the database.

Oracle Database

I believe that Oracle Database can be used almost on any scenario, starting with small department solutions to actually any enterprise level system. It includes many features that allow a single database to work as an OLTP and Data Warehouse at the same time, reducing hardware requirements and the need to implement ETL or integration solutions between OLTP and DW.

Pros

MariaDB

  • Simpler learning curve. MariaDB is a cleaner, simpler system that is (IMO) easier to learn and easier to manage effectively than many other database systems.
  • Lower hardware requirements. After migrating to MariaDB from another database software system, we find that our hardware needs have substantially decreased.
  • MariaDB support is very responsive. It's like they actually care. On the few occasions we've run into technical issues, support has always come through with what we needed. Once it was showing me a relatively new feature the server supported that I wasn't aware of, that, once I was able to properly make use of it helped me resolve a serious production performance issue.
  • Architectural flexibility. As an example, the ready availability of synchronous (Galera) versus asynchronous replication schemes without being locked into one of the other by enormous technical complexity or punitive licensing, allows the customer to find what really works best for their needs.

Oracle Database

  • Oracle database is battle tested and has been in the industry for a long time, meaning they have a good understanding of the markets demands.
  • Oracle database is secure and ensures that user data is not tampered with through prompt updates.
  • Peer to peer communities are available to help solve almost all problems that one may be facing.

Cons

MariaDB

  • Driver Support - Some third party applications use database drivers that cause unexplained slowness with MariaDB. This can be worked around by using the MySQL drivers, but it's not clear what causes the problem in the first place.
  • Support - While online communities are helpful in diagnosing problems, there isn't as much professional documentation/support available for MariaDB as some of the other major database options.
  • Data Visualization - It would be helpful if there were more built in options for analyzing statistics and generating reports.

Oracle Database

  • Oracle 12c SQL Developer is included with the product for no additional licensing cost, but it is much more limited compared to query tools such as TOAD.
  • Oracle 12c stumbles on certain queries with the optimizer not catching simple methods to return queries very quickly. Often a scalar subquery is required to reduce the time by up to 99%.
  • On occasion, the optimizer can miss simple changes such as IN ('1','2','3') working but BETWEEN '1' AND '3' being stuck in an infinite loop.

MariaDB is very usable and stable to be used in production settings as an alternative to MySQL. The shortcomings of SQL are present but well understood in the community, and if the decision were to be made again, I would choose MariaDB over MySQL on future projects.

Many of the powerful options can be auto-configured but there are still many things to take into account at the moment of installing and configuring an Oracle Database, compared with SQL Server or other databases. At the same time, that extra complexity allows for detailed configuration and guarantees performance, scalability, availability and security.

Well I have never had to use MariaDB for support. However, they get a ten because the support community online is just fantastic. There is always someone there to answer a question. Moreover it is easy to find documentation online. Again, this is often the case with open source software

The product is very good but when you need help it's very difficult. Oracle must have a database with all the customers' configuration so we don't lose a lot of time answering questions. We finally contract with a premium DBA to solve all our issues.

The implementation of Oracle Database 12C was smooth and upgradation can be performed in minimum time as oracle 12C gives option to perform metadata upgrade using parallel option

Alternatives Considered

MariaDB

We know others DB alternatives like MySQL, Microsoft SQLServer, PostgreSQL. We selected MariaDB because it offer advanced features like active-active cluster, with no costs and easy to learn. With MariaDB was easy to migrate ours applications that use MySQL, with no modifications needs. Microsoft SQLServer has the best client to management, but you need to pay for it.

Oracle Database

Compared to other SQL type databases, Oracle can simply be described as a super-set or an extension of them.As Oracle has not only the features of SQL but also PL/SQL, it is much more feature rich compared to other databases technologies. However, there is no fair way to compared Oracle against MongoDB as their basic principles are on totally different terms.Any application that needs not only the power of storage but automatic manipulation of data dynamically during runtime is definitely a place where Oracle should be used.

Return on Investment

MariaDB

  • Easy to set up and maintain.
  • Massive user base which makes it relatively easier to find answers if there's something wrong.
  • Open source and free to use, meaning we don't have to think twice to use it in production in terms of costs.

Oracle Database

  • Positive Impact - I have been serving as a DBA to a Aviation Industry customer since 2009. Aviation Industry User community believes that Oracle database product is best product in the world. The reason would be it has been in the market for many years, more reliable product and the customer has more confidence in Oracle than others, has good market reputation, so many oracle expertise easily available whenever and where ever needed in affordable cost.
  • Positive Impact - Oracle12c with - ODA, Exadata, Big data appliance, Super cluster, and Oracle12c cloud offering are becoming popular day by day.
  • Negative Impact - Oracle licensing cost has been one of the most debatable topics in business user community every year.
