Microsoft Exchange
Microsoft Exchange is very well suited for larger organizations that have offices spread across the globe. This way all staff can still access their mailboxes from any where. But for smaller individual offices, it may be more advantageous to just sign on to a web service to access email instead of Microsoft Exchange.

Pros
Microsoft Exchange
- [Microsoft] Exchange is the gold standard for Corporate email. It is flawless in maintaining and delivering email to all of our users. It has been around so long the thing it does the best is just work. Most of the flaws and bugs are already out of the system.
- The GUI management tools for MS Exchange, whether Online or on-premise, are fairly well documented and for the most part fairly easy to use.
- [Microsoft] Exchange gives you the option to have an all in one box solution. Its not recommended but for smaller shops its a nice alternative to a more extensive setup that requires multiple servers.
- If sized correctly, MS Exchanges is fine tuned out of the box to be fairly quick and responsive as to email delivery.

Cons
Microsoft Exchange
- Some of our customers have asked for a feature called 'plus addressing'. This is widely used in the Linux/Gmail email systems but is not available on Exchange.
- Inbox rules. The basics are there, however, there is some need for a more robust method of catching and sorting email. Some rule editors include a RegEx editor that would allow for this.
- As of a few years ago, MS has been focusing more on their development efforts on their cloud solution and now so much on the on-premises application. Most feel that the new features do not make it to the on-prem application, forcing corporations to migrate to the cloud.
- Anti-SPAM and AntiVirus. MS Exchange has never done a great job of keeping the bad email out of the system. This has opened up an opportunity for other companies to take advantage of selling an email firewall to catch a bad email before reaching Exchange.

It is the best, and perhaps only, email solution worth considering.

We have a good enterprise agreement with Microsoft which affords us quick phone support. I have found the support staff knowledgeable and prompt with a solution when required. At times it may be difficult to schedule a call back, this is mainly due to our need for calls early in the morning which happens to be during a shift change at Microsoft support.

Implementation/conversion can be quite complex and, unless you have certified Exchange administrators in-house, you should strongly consider a 3rd party consultant for this implementation.

Alternatives Considered
Microsoft Exchange
There is nothing I've seen in any organization I've been part of in over 20 years that's been used in place as the corporate solution for email. The standardization of Exchange across nearly all major corporations and government agencies is near complete I not really aware of any viable alternatives. There is Yahoo or Google, but these are not used by anyone I've worked for so no really things to compare against.

Return on Investment
Microsoft Exchange
- There have been hiccups and downtime with our on-premise installation but overall the local installation has saved us money in the long run versus paying a monthly fee for ~125 mailboxes.
- Our internet service likes to take mid-day breaks every so often. Having a local Exchange server allows us to continue to communicate internally and manage meetings, presentation, and other events at our site.
- Despite the overall good that Exchange has provided our organization it is a time suck. Managing the server, spam appliance, backups, and storage space is a constant battle and has taken away from some of our other initiatives. This is not specific to Exchange but any on-premise email server.
