MongoDB Atlas

I would recommend MongoDB Atlas to every company who have a significant need in the NoSQL database and do not want to manage their infrastructure. Using MongoDB Atlas can significantly reduce your management time and cost, which saves valuable resources for other tasks. It also suits a smaller company as MongoDB Atlas scales up and down very quickly.

Oracle Autonomous Database

Oracle Autonomous Database is good when you need the database to tune itself, create resource plans and gives indexing recommendations. Storage management is also important aspect that Oracle Autonomous Database is providing. We used to have an error messages when one table space is full, or the users are disconnected from the system when the memory is full. I think that this database is appropriate and more features are very welcome.

Pros

MongoDB Atlas

  • DB Provisioning.
  • DB Management.

Oracle Autonomous Database

  • Robust - this product doesn't have a lot of downtime. It's less prone to errors than some other tools I've worked with.
  • Scalable - we can keep adding more things to it. We haven't hit any roadblocks when we've tried to do more with our database.

Cons

MongoDB Atlas

  • It would be nice if MongoDB had a feature where in users could simply use Atlas as a tool to manage data on their cloud instead of hosting data on MongoDBs servers.
  • One of the drawbacks of MongoDB is the cost; Atlas isn't cheap either. Hopefully more competition will bring down the costs over time.

Oracle Autonomous Database

  • Autonomous DB integration with PeopleSoft. Issues noticed in the application.
  • More flexibility of user access to DB OS.
  • External connections using DB link is not possible .
  • Appears sophisticated as a majority of the controls reside with Oracle in terms of security, patching, maintenance, tuning. Less responsibility to a proficient DBA.

Autonomous is the way of the future and this is one system which is crucial to any system and is also autonomous. It is self-tuning and self-maintaining which are major advantages.

We love MongoDB support and have great relationship with them. When we decided to go with MongoDB Atlas, they sent a team of 5 to our company to discuss the process of setting up a Mongo cluster and walked us through. when we have questions, we create a ticket and they will respond very quickly

Alternatives Considered

MongoDB Atlas

When choosing a NoSQL, open source database, MongoDB is the clear winner from an implementation standpoint. For databases that are better suited for highly-organized data, a traditional database engine like MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle's RDBMS may be a better choice. When the requirement is for a NoSQL production database, MongoDB and Atlas are the clear winners from an implementation and management perspective and is very cost-competitive with offerings from Azure Cosmos and Amazon Document DB.

Oracle Autonomous Database

Features provided by Oracle Autonomous Database including automation, high availability, self-securing, self-repairing and automated database tuning are hugely unique and are not supported by products from other vendors. According to the research we have performed so far, it seems that the introduction of machine learning algorithms is a winning factor that will become more and more desirable in the world of enterprise database products.

Return on Investment

MongoDB Atlas

  • Positive - Faster provisioning so we don't have development teams waiting.
  • Positive - Automated backups and server management - eliminates need for dedicated DBAs.

Oracle Autonomous Database

  • Oracle Autonomous Database, and the safe harbor statements, are good, and when it comes to availability Oracle should control the number of bugs we hit every year, and they need to test all those bugs and the impacts before they release. They may be doing it today, but still, they need to invest their money into it. Even TDE is new and needs to improve a lot. The troubleshooting with TDE and skill level in Oracle needs to improve.
