If you're looking for a small or medium size eCommerce portal, nopCommerce is the best framework. 1. Cost = open sourced framework. You will just simply bypass the application design and development process, but you will have to code to do whatever you want to do for your business needs. It will save you a lot of time and money.2. Technical Architecture = It was created with the best application design and architecture. If you are not into eCommerce, but want to understand EntityFrame code first and domain architecture, Dependency Injection,..etc, nopCommerce is the one.3. I'm sure your business users will ask for the features that are already included with nopCommerce.

Optimizely Commerce Cloud (formerly Episerver Commerce Cloud)

Episerver Digital Commerce may be a good fit for you if you do not have your own development team, do not need any custom development, and the out-of-the-box experience takes care of all your business needs. If you need significant custom development and value testable, discoverable software, then Episerver Digital Commerce will not be a good fit for your organization.

Pros

nopCommerce

  • Excellent modular architecture, which makes it very easy to customize for different kinds of needs.
  • It is open source, free and is constantly updated to keep it up to the latest technologies.
  • The latest version in ASP.NET Core runs in Windows and Linux with excellent performance (Google Page Speed of 100/100).
  • It has a very active community which helps to enhance the solution, develop extensions and themes and helps other users.
  • It is full of features including Multi-Store, Multi-Vendor, and Multi-Warehouse.

  • Web content management -- the interface is drag and drop and makes it very easy for business users to create product pages.
  • In site search with Episerver Find -- it is easy to promote attributes and make quick tweaks to fine-tune results.
  • Integrate with other systems -- we have integrated with our ERP, our product information management system, our digital asset management system and our marketing automation system to take advantage of investments we have already made in content and customer data.

Cons

nopCommerce

  • More community templates would be great.
  • Some of the pricing can be a bit tricky, especially configured items... there is a likelihood of mispriced items with the current structure

  • Support. Episerver used to have direct support and access to the tech team to discuss and resolve issues. The new support portal is not enough for developer needs.
  • Quality Assurance. We find issues in the Episerver code that should have been resolved in QA before release.
  • Sales. Episervers sells the framework as a solution while showing Alloy. While it helps Episerver sell more, it puts the implementation partner into trouble as the client thinks they bought the solution. Episerver does not provide a solution. It provides a framework that you can build a solution on.

Really want to be able to spend more time and resources on rolling out new things with Episerver but at the moment we seem to be fixing alot of issues and pain points with the way our system was setup.

The CMS has clearly had time to evolve as a tool but the digital commerce aspect is outdated and needs to be reviewed as it is not intuitive to the admins using it.

I have asked numerous questions and the team treats my random questions as if they are critical to the continued success of their product. They really take each users' questions to heart and strive to solve them. I cannot commend them enough on how fast they respond to questions as well as the follow-through given to things thay may or may not even be a part of their platform.

Go for a plugin based development if you would like to extend nopCommerce. This approach will make it easier for you to upgrade the software.

Fully understand what is OOTB feature of the platform before proceeding to develop. Then implement a customization of key features once you can prove they are working as OOTB to make them more user friendly and productive for the business. Eg pre order and e gift card

Alternatives Considered

nopCommerce

nopCommerce is more powerful than other products. It is also a stable and reliable solution, but performance can be an issue. This is a secure e-commerce platform, scalable and flexible and has a management module to manage the store, products, customers, orders, etc. Also, it is easy to extend functionalities through plugins or code customization.

Just depends on the use case. Some clients are more heavily weighted towards a marketing CMS and don't need a ton of complex technical functions of their eCommerce platform. For these we recommend Episerver.

Return on Investment

nopCommerce

  • It saved development cost and time for our development team who don't have eCommerce experience. It saved us six months worth of designing and implementing the eCommerce application. No need to mention that our management team and business users were so happy about it.
  • Because of well architectural design, it was so easy to maintain the whole application and include add-on new features from time to time. Making changes and deployment can be done just within a few hours was absolutely phenomenal. It was the trust that technical team gain from management team to make the whole business process running smooth and so every one can sleep sound at night.
  • As our online eCommerce site, http://www.luxegourmets.com has been running more than two years now using nopCommerce, business users are looking to expand and integrate with third party tools. Without further investing and looking for solutions, we have all the tools and add-on features are already provided by the framework.

  • Our rocky implementation was very costly to our organization
  • The untestable nature of epiCommerce has cost us a lot in development time and fragile integrations
  • The difficult database schema has cost us a great deal of development time for maintenance and new feature development
