Likelihood to Recommend

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

  • It is perfectly suited for environments with 100+ virtual servers. It is essential in environments with several clusters and 500+ virtual servers.
  • It would be optimal for hybrid environments with Hyper-V and VMware.
  • It can be expensive for small businesses.
  • It is not recommended in case most of the environment is on physical servers or cloud platforms

A health checker of an environment, that will tell you cost analysis of what that fault or vm is costing your company. vRealize will also tell you where you can save costs by removing unused resources.

Pros

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

  • VMAN's powerful sprawl analyses allows businesses to see where their hypervisor estate can be made more efficient. Coupled with powerful capacity management, the efficiency gains allow the product to quickly start returning on it's investment, allowing businesses to do more with what they already have.
  • The recommendations provided by VNMAN allows administrators to schedule changes in compute, storage assignment, and host/guest balance. These changes can be automated to take place on a schedule to suit, with VMAN making the changes at the appropriate time, allowing businesses to potentially save on expensive out of hours administration.
  • It's not only on-premise! With VMAN you can monitor your cloud-based guests on Amazon EC2 and Microsoft Azure.

  • It is a VMware product so integration is so easy.
  • It is agentless and monitoring very well.
  • I like the dynamic threshold option where value is set on its own.

Cons

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

  • We did have issues during the setup, with successfully connecting to some of our hosts and vCenters and we found support were just sending us back to articles we had already read, it was also taking long periods before getting a response. The issue is still ongoing, in fact.

vRealize Operations

  • Its a complex software that is gathering info daily, sometimes determining how to get the info you want can be troublesome that requires the help from VMware to get setup.
  • A better search function to allow users to pull info instead of going through predetermine dashboards

Currently, there is no other tool that gives us what we need to monitor a geographically disperse environment with multiple non-related instances of VM clusters. In addition, the level of reporting, historical data trending, and alerting that VMAN provides is essential for our business process. Lastly, the effort to customize and set up any monitoring system is not trivial. This makes switching to any other product very difficult without being able to clearly demonstrate a ROI.

I find it to be very usable. This product if a must have in any IT admin arsenal. Its a wonderful tool and its integration with Orion is seamless. It provides a single pane of glass view to your products and services of your virtual environment while if provides notifications to you for the best possible support options.

SolarWinds gives good support. I have never had a time when i was working through a support case where I did not get the support I needed for the required issues to be resolved. I have always had resolutions from SolarWinds support. They are top notch. Issues once had are no more.

Implementation

Pretty straighforward, as long as you check Solarwinds site for recommended installation path. KEY ITEM - be sure that you know which versions of all SolarWinds products you are using, because there are incompatability issues between versions for many products. It took me about 2 hours with a spreadsheet to figure out an upgrade path. Don't assume that the version you downloaded is the right/most current version without checking first!

Alternatives Considered

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

I've attempted to use various conglomerations of Nagios, PRTG, Spiceworks and Zabbix. None were as easy to set up, manage and alert from. None also gave me near the feature set. The out-of-the-box reports and planning features didn't exist. The manual set up was extremely time-intensive and most of that information was lost when I left those workplaces.

We are a VMware shop and need monitoring from VMware. Also, I am not the decision maker here. I believe because of being a VMware shop we choose VRO and also may be my company got a great deal. I like this product although there is a lot of stuff to improve

Return on Investment

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

  • Snapshot Management - It is nice to have an automated tool for cleaning up snapshots because this is often forgotten in the day to day. One of those things that no one wants to do themselves
  • VM Management - we are still getting started with this but we keep finding it coming up a little short on exactly what we need, it will do most of the job we need but still requires some manual intervention.
