Barracuda Backup - A refreshingly simple take on Backups

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We currently use Barracuda Backup to backup our physical servers and Office 365 environment. Barracuda Backup's cloud to cloud backup has been an almost setup and forget solution for us. Now it also includes Entra ID, it is providing us an all round backup solution for our Office365 environment. We have deployed to also backup our physical onsite servers with as much ease as the cloud setup

Pros

  • Easy setup for cloud to cloud
  • Clear visibility of backup success/issues
  • Simple "restore everything"

Cons

  • Could do with a better single item restore - particularly in the cloud to cloud backup
  • Browsing backups can be slow
  • File level restore for Hyper V

Likelihood to Recommend

Very well suited for full Office 365 environment's, Barracuda Backup has saved us a few headaches with its simple mailbox restore overtime. Also has saved us when SharePoint sites have been accidentally deleted with a very simple one click restore, this was also completed in a very timely manner

We have not used Barracuda Backup for our Hyper V estate as compared to other products it is lacking some restore ability - namely we had issues with single file restores to our file server

Barracuda Backup functions

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Its primary use is server backup. Our company Complete Computing, Inc has chosen Barracuda Backup as its primary online server backup. We use other backup systems when our customer has an existing backup system, usually for desktop and laptop backup. We use BMR for full server recovery in ransomware scenarios.

Pros

  • BMR of server volumes, specifically for volumes on RAID arrays
  • flexibility in backup scheduling
  • restoring individual files from a previous backup

Cons

  • I haven't had the time to determine critical needs that are not being addressed

Likelihood to Recommend

It is well-designed for onsite backups to local appliances that will be synched with an online database for further protection. These features are more expensive than other backup systems, but they are needed by businesses for backup redundancy.

Barracuda Backup is good for small companies with low impact of downtime.

Rating: 6 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used Barracuda Backup to back up our servers and VMs at our COLO. The issue with the device is that it's raid 1 and uses spinning hard drives. For the price you pay for the device it should at least have SSDs even if they are SATA. When you open it up, it just a desktop gigabyte brand motherboard that is flashed with a custom bios. Nothing special or proprietary.

Pros

  • The local interface to manage the backup is convenient
  • The granularity of some backups worked well.
  • It wasn't restricted to physical server or VMs, but was hybrid.
  • It does dedup and compression well. (Although this causes slow restores)

Cons

  • The dedup and compression are good, but this causes slow restores because of the media used to backup to (Spinning disks).
  • When we stopped using it, it wasn't able to perform file level restores on VHDX VM drives. Only VHD VM drives.
  • Sometimes the cloudbased webUI wouldn't work and you would have to used the LOCAL webUI to perform whatever task.
  • You have to use the Local webUI to reboot the device. You couldn't use the cloud based UI to do this.
  • It would constantly hold on to data that was marked and been purged. Yet persisted on disk.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you are a small business with a few machines and your backups aren't of servers that are public facing.
If you had to restore a server from backup, it would take a day at least. So, if the server being restored was public facing, that may impact customer relations.

Not a Saleable Enterprise Backup Solution

Rating: 5 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used Barracuda Backup to backup data across our entire enterprise. We backed up all recent versions of Windows and Red Hat Linux servers both physical and virtualized with VMware ESXi as well as SQL Server Databases.

Pros

  • VM Image Based Backup
  • Individual file backup from file share

Cons

  • Overall Mgmt/Admin GUI
  • Tech Support
  • Oracle Backup Support
  • SQL Backup Support

Likelihood to Recommend

From my experience, it was not a good product for our sized enterprise we quickly outgrow the appliance and there is no easy way to add storage. The backups worked well for use while we used the product but once we grew there wasn't a way to expand without replacing it.

Good quality backup solution for DR

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use the on-site appliance to backup for our entire organization, our VMware environment, and a couple of physical machines. We also use the AWS replication service for off-site backups, utilizing the Barracuda Backup schedules and retention policies.

Pros

  • Provides quick review of backup status
  • Good customer service

Cons

  • The web interface could be updated to be more modern.
  • Some views and access to information are not available within the web console, and only by asking tech support can I get some details.

Likelihood to Recommend

The Barracuda Backup appliance and services accomplish what we need, in order to be prepared for disaster recovery. There is always room for improvement, including their web console interface with the need for more details to be made available to the end-user.

Backup Cloud to cloud done right

Rating: 7 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We currently use this product to backup all of our Microsoft Office 365 Emails, OneDrive and SharePoint files. We have been using this product for a few years and mostly happy with it as it securely, affordably and efficiently backs files up in a cloud to cloud format, which makes administration simple.

Pros

  • Cloud to cloud backup
  • Office 365 Backup
  • Full an partial backup

Cons

  • Prone to timeout errors with large files
  • Has long backup sessions

Likelihood to Recommend

Barracuda Backup is well suited for an organization that is using cloud only applications and would like to have a backup solution that offers them some security against their files. I would not recommend this tool for large enterprise, as the licensing may get out of control and I am not sure the Cloud to Cloud backup would work for such large files, as it has timed out and errored out for my 150-200 users at times.

Barracuda: Great for Internal Email Systems

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Barracuda Backup across our whole organization. It does a great job filtering spam and backing up email. It is extremely easy to look up backed up emails and restore them. We receive a lot of spam, to the point were Barracuda reports that it blocks 97% of the spam messages we would normally receive.

Pros

  • Blocks Spam emails
  • Backup crucial emails
  • Restores lost or deleted emails

Cons

  • Older interface could use an update
  • Better documentation for how to perform certain functions
  • Backing up the actual configuration of the system itself

Likelihood to Recommend

Barracuda works great if you have an internal secure email system. In our use case, it does not work for out sourced email such as Gmail. Barracuda is a powerful tool when it comes to filtering your private email systems and backing up those emails. Having an external email archive is extremely useful, especially when it comes to legal situations.

The solution was used across the entire organization. It provided onsite and off site backups of a business critical information. I’ve used the solution at two different organizations and in both instances it has exceeded expectations. Customer support is always on point when needed.

  • On-site/off-site data storage.
  • Real time notifications of failures and successful backups.
  • Two factor login support.
  • Restoration from both onsite and could copies.
  • Easy setup.
  • Flexible scheduling.

Cons

  • I’m happy with all that the solution offers.

Likelihood to Recommend

It’s an excellent solution with sizing and pricing options for all sized users. Setup is fast and simple and daily use is just as easy. Excellent reporting options and configurable notifications. Flexible scheduling of backups as well [as] configurations for onsite, and onsite vs offsite replication. Multi factor authentication is an additional plus. Restoration is a breeze and reliable. The ability to define granular selections for backups was great. Selecting the exact files or directory and assign[ing] it to a very flexible back schedule makes the Barracuda a great solution for every user.

Barracuda Backup is best solution in this space

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Barracuda Backup was personally the best backup product I've worked with in my 25 years of IT. The interface is friendly, the search is easy, restore is a no-brainer, and replication to another device or cloud was also very easy. The on-premise appliance was being used to backup 2 sites and replicate them to the Barracuda Cloud.

Pros

  • Backing up VMWare hosts
  • Deduplication
  • Index searching

Cons

  • Tech support
  • Self diagnosing non mounting backup files

Likelihood to Recommend

Backup is a standard today; everyone needs it and every company should not be running anything without it. Barracuda allows for a very simple configuration of backing up a data center or even PCs and laptops. The tech support when setting up a new device was very easy to work with and provided a dedicated rep to assist with learning.

Automotive Dealership Best Practices with Barracuda. Great for offsite management.

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use 2 Barracuda devices for backups of our Primary VMware server and remote servers. It runs daily incremental backups on the company's shared files and weekly backups of the entire server environment. We use it along with weekly VMware backups for baremetal recovery.

Pros

  • Works well with VMware.
  • Easy file recovery for directories and files.
  • Quick restore for basic Virtual machines.
  • Great for roll back instead of snapshots.

Cons

  • Sometimes the cloud interface times out.
  • Have had one flashed dead with firmware, was replaced.

Likelihood to Recommend

Better then tapes and bad Windows software that does not do the quality of backup this device can provide. Cost is higher than most but tech support is super. Easy implementation for VMware, clients are light.
