Enhance the system performance and productivity with the help of BMC AMI Ops

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In our organisation happilo we use BMC AMI Ops as a complete real time monitoring solution. The software help us in getting better visibility into system performance, workload and other resources from a single user interface this is the tool that is actively used for infrastructure team and also monitor memory consumptions, transaction performance and overall system in longrun.

Pros

  • After installing BMC AMI Ops we have got real-time monitoring and alerts during any system issues
  • The system is mainly automated and helps in reducing work load and human errors
  • Due to high workload we have faced slow system responses but this tool helped in optimising the performance and allocate the system resources better

Cons

  • As compared to newer monitoring tools the user interface of BMC AMI Ops feels more outdated and less user friendly
  • Also the system is mainly dependent on mainframe that's why to utilise it on its fullest capabilities the team need to have a good knowledge of IBM Z systems
  • The software consume all the resources especially when it is monitoring on large scale environment

Return on Investment

  • Before installing this software we used to face unplanned outages and delay issue but with real time monitoring and intelligent alerts our overall downtown time has been reduced by more than 32-35% this year
  • Also operational cost have been reduced by more than 20 to 25% due to reduced in manual workload and focus on higher value task
  • Initial setup was little difficult but after installation of this tool we have noticed measurable improvement regarding the Alert accuracy and incident handling in first 2-3 months only

BMC AMI Ops review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Good product.
Used to monitor a large amount of domains (CICS/DB2/MQ and so on) and done correlation between events.
Some parts of product need enhancements (Alarms, CICS/CTG, etc ...) but can be used every day as is.
Interface is friendly and intuitive.
3270 interface can be customized.
Graphic interface is a lot complex.

Pros

  • Monitor thresholds
  • Give statistics about transactions usage
  • Automate some actions on alarms

Cons

  • Consumption on alarm domain
  • Graphic interface not easy to use (UI)
  • Some enhancement about NGL (not easy to track)

Return on Investment

  • Proactive
  • Reduced costs
  • Reduced performance impact

Reliable mainframe monitoring but needs a modern touch.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use BMC AMI Ops mainly to monitor our mainframe and keep an eye on system performance. It detects the problems early and reduces downtime. Without it, things would be difficult, and this helps in making it smooth.

Pros

  • Real time visibility into mainframe performance.
  • Generates reliable alerts that helps in taking timely action.
  • Reduces downtime by identifying issues.

Cons

  • The UI feels very outdated and should be changed.
  • Dashboard are very time taking in customizing.

Return on Investment

  • Enables faster root cause analysis which reduces downtime.
  • Detects and resolve the bottleneck before it impact the operations.

Usability

Review of BMC AMI Ops by new user who is experienced in mainframe monitoring

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use BMC AMI Ops to monitor our mainframe applications and the mainframe environment. I find the BMC AMI Ops provide all the available information and in a detailed manner. I appreciate that there are several alternate interfaces to basically the same data. It depends upon your comfort level. Either ISPF, java or web-based.

Pros

  • Monitor Db2 application activity
  • Monitor Db2 application history
  • give overall info on the mainframe and LPARs

Cons

  • Some of the data in java (or web) is presented in what looks like the original ISPF panels. Functional, but not pretty. Keep the same info but make it more presentable
  • More online help on field. Or expanded help
  • perhaps an option for fewer screens for novice users

Return on Investment

  • Quickly identify problems when they occur
  • Highlight what are possible solutions or changes to minimize or fix the problem
  • Provides data that can be shown to managment
