Gatsby

Gatsby is an open-source, React-based static site generator (SSG) and web framework originally developed by Gatsby, Inc. The framework compiles content from headless Content Management Systems (CMS), REST/GraphQL APIs, databases, and markdown files into optimized static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript bundles through a unified GraphQL data layer, supporting static site generation, server-side rendering (SSR), and deferred static generation (DSG).

In February 2023, Netlify acquired Gatsby, Inc. Following the acquisition, the commercial Gatsby Cloud hosting SaaS platform was officially retired and consolidated into Netlify's edge hosting platform; the gatsbyjs.com site directs users to deploy and manage their sites on Netlify. The open-source Gatsby Framework continues to operate as a community project under Netlify's ongoing development stewardship.

Core Framework & Data Integration

The Gatsby Framework incorporates a built-in GraphQL data layer that abstracts content sources, APIs, and microservices into a single query interface during build time. The framework includes an extensive plugin ecosystem for integrating headless CMS platforms, ecommerce platforms, and digital asset management tools, alongside framework adapters that compile build outputs for deployment across hosting environments.

Current State & Product Orientation

While the proprietary Gatsby Cloud SaaS service has been sunsetted and merged into Netlify, the open-source Gatsby Framework remains maintained. Ongoing framework updates, bug fixes, and security patches continue under Netlify's engineering stewardship, with commercial hosting and enterprise build pipelines handled via the Netlify platform.
