Use Cases and Deployment Scope

TargetX is a more comprehensive solution for Enrollment Management in Higher Ed users of Salesforce. It provides a full suite solution versus the basic architecture provided by the free EDA solution. It essentially makes Salesforce a LOT more useful to recruiting arms of Higher Ed schools than it would be out of the box.

Most of the reason I'd recommend the solution is for their email capabilities. The email builder is par excellence, almost if not more competitive than capabilities provided by some actual Email Marketing solutions. Additionally, it runs on Salesforce, and thus allows for automated emails and campaigns with information integrated into them from SF records. It is truly remarkable and a very well-developed capability.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

TargetX is used by all of our Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions Offices to manage all prospective students - from initial inquiry (or name buy), to enrollment in the university.
TargetX provides a suite of products that sit on top of, and customize, Salesforce for the Higher Education market.
TargetX's email platform is a key benefit, as well as their online application.
Their SMS and Print products are newer and still need some capacity.

Cons

Acquisition by Liaison has decreased customer/account support
Native SMS is not fully capable
Moving products from 3rd party (like Conga Connect) to internal (TargetX Print) has decreased capability.

Likelihood to Recommend

TargetX is a great full-service suite for Colleges and Universities looking to implement a new CRM, or are wanting to migrate from a different CRM.
TargetX works great for multiple departments, but will need to be somewhat modified to make sure each department has the data security they need.
TargetX know enrollment, and does a good job putting together the pieces needed.
Due to the way it is customized on Salesforce, it is very hard to use some 3rd party Salesforce AppExchange tools as they expect the data to be in a different model.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

TargetX is being used by all of our recruitment and admissions departments across campus. This means all of our graduate, adult, and traditional undergraduate programs all use TargetX for recruitment of new students and marketing to potential students. We currently use it to send email marketing to prospective students in all of our programs. We also use it as our sole CRM and very much enjoy the integration with Salesforce that it provides.

Pros

Addresses the higher education infrastructure to integrate Salesforce
Email marketing is done at huge cost savings over other marketing platforms in Salesforce
Helps facilitate events on an off-campus
Helps our admissions counselors keep up on tasks and contacts

Cons

When sending large volumes of email the campaigns can be slow to send
The events functions are not as robust as some of the competition
Their telemarketing component has not been updated in a while and leaves a bit for current call centers.

Likelihood to Recommend

TargetX is very well suited for smaller colleges who do not have all of the resources to manage a pure Salesforce environment for their CRM. They provide great support and direction for different business use cases. They have a product that has been around longer than any other higher ed CRM solution out there in regards to Salesforce. It is likely less appropriate for a school that has a lot of resources and could handle using Salesforce and their HEDA approach to higher ed CRM solutions.
