Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Azure

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We assumed Azure would automatically back up our data, but later learned otherwise. Veeam was able to be used across on-prem and Azure, centralizing management.

In replacement of native Azure backup which seems to cost an arm and a leg. Azure native backup also seems to balloon quickly with storage growth. We use Veeam Backup for Azure and had more reliable pricing.

Cannot create repositories in accoutns with Azure Data Lake Storage or blob provisioning enabled

Usability

Interface is intuitive and easy to setup. Simple to configure and documentation is clear and easy to follow. Deployment is fast. Seamless integration with Azure services and other Veeam products makes hybrid environments easy to manage.

It would earn a perfect score once the granularity of SQL restores are included. Veeam Backup for Azure should be able to restore individual databases without restoring the entire virtual machine.

Alternatives Considered

Rubrik and Cohesity

We chose Veeam Backup for Azure over Rubrik and Cohesity for the flexibility of working across virtual, physical and cloud workloads with hardware dependencies. All inclusive pricing was also nice and we could avoid the sticker shock common with capacity based models. Built in ransomware protection and immutable backups were included with all 3 solutions, but the cost was less using Veeam Backup for Azure.

Likelihood to Recommend

I think it is best suited for hybrid environments because it provides a centralized management. This avoids having to bounce between tools. I would say it is less suited for Azure VM's hosting SQL Server. You cannot restore a single database without restoring the entire virtual machine. This is a major drawback for database heavy environments.
