Overall Satisfaction with Adobe Acrobat
We provide training and professional development documentation for online courses using PDFs created in Adobe Illustrator and Acrobat.
We have over 30 online courses using PDFs, with some courses having over 50 PDFs. Acrobat Pro helps us tag the PDFs for screen reader accessibility, which is a major concern for online businesses these days.

Pros
- It has a some good options for setting up fillable forms
- Tagging content for screen readers
- Offering image and text layouts which makes content more interesting
Cons
- The auto-tagging feature for screen readers does a good job sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't work at all and it all has to be manually tagged
- The UI can be a little confusing, and it seems to randomly change
- The process to just download Acrobat Pro is odd, with necessary links being hidden at the bottom of pages and you have to scroll to find them.
- We have had more interest in our courses now that we have used Acrobat Pro to tag all of our PDFs for screen reader functionality
- While our courses are only available to people for a limited time, they are able to keep and refer to the PDFs we generate which helps them retain information longer
- We have reduced the number of document "types" from multiple types (Word, Excel, Dropbox Paper, etc) to just the one document type.
- Other
PDF tagging for screen reader accessibility has been the most important factor for us using Adobe Acrobat. We have courses in English, Spanish, and French. Not only can we tag the content that is in different languages, but the language localization options help screen readers know "how" to read the content, which is good for our users.
While I understand the importance of security and compliance, sometimes it feels like Adobe has gone overboard with it. It took 10+ minutes just to down load Adobe Acrobat Pro when I was setting up my new computer last week. Also, it seems like Adobe takes up a lot of computer resources...I don't know if that is security related or not though.
- Microsoft 365
MS Word / Excel / etc offer good editable files and can deliver a lot of the same content that Adobe Acrobat does, but I guess they are meant for different purposes. So I am not sure if they are really a good thing to compare. Often times I will use Word to export into PDF format, and then use Acrobat to tag for screen readers. So I guess they are more complimentary with each other.
