Overall Satisfaction with Altium Designer

I use Altium Designer as an Electrical Engineer for designing schematics and pcb layout. The needs Altium Designer addresses are: component pull in with manufacturer specs through the Manufacturer Part Search, MCAD plug in for the PCB between SOLIDWORKS as a way to know pcb sizing for real world usage, and finally, neat cloud saving and uploading for cross person review and editing.

Pros

  • Neat Layout
  • Intuitive UI
  • Easy Saving and Cloud uploading
  • manufacturer part search with footprints

Cons

  • even more component schematic and footprints would be awesome
  • make the simulation more intuitive
  • better editing of schematic page "heading" editor
  • faster engineering
  • postive turn around time from concept to pcb
  • negative might be cost
The software is really easy to use for me and is something I am familiar with. The only point against it for usability for me personally is still the simulation, but everything else it does well and has been very easy to learn and keep using, especially compared to other software.
Going from part search, to schematic, to pcb design is a streamlined and seamless process, and one that Altium Designer does really well, so it has definitely had a postive impact on our organizations design efficiency. The cross team aspect especially helps as other people can edit the same design as they are more suited.
For some reason Autodesk Eagle wasn't showing up, but personally the cross team aspect of Altium Designer is much better, as well as the schematic editing and PCB editing, especially on a board level with placing constraints and editing layers. Fusion360 with its new schematic editor would be a good comparison as well, where Altium Designer beats it in usability.

- simulation for simple or complex designs (at least from my usage, as there are easier to use softwares out there)
