Overall Satisfaction with IBM Cloudability

We run a proof of concept for Apptio Cloudability during 2021. The product helps manage cloud spending with the three main providers (Amazon, Google, Microsoft), thus, it is well suited for organizations with multiple CSPs. Cloudability offers a good built-in reporting engine, as well as an integration to Apptio BI. Cloudability extracts billing and consumption data to provide insights to optimize cloud spending. It also allows mapping consumption to user-defined business objects, e.g. based on tags or other elements. We had a very specific use case that Apptio Cloudability did not support directly.

Pros

  • Data ingestion (consumption, billing)
  • Optimization insights
  • Business mappings
  • True cost explorer

Cons

  • We were not able to use allocation coefficients in building Business Mappings.
  • Business Mappings are difficult and cumbersome to use.
  • The logic in the reporting engine is not flexible.
It took us a while to get started (a few months), mostly because of security- and access-related issues. Once we got the connectivity up and running, it was relatively straightforward. Navigation is fine, once you get used to the menu structure. We found some of the selections and menus a bit inflexible.
We didn't get to integrate Apptio One and Cloudability. I believe it would have been possible using Apptio Datalink.
Our organization looked at CloudHealth by VMware, but I was not involved in the evaluation.

Do you think IBM Cloudability delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with IBM Cloudability's feature set?

Yes

Did IBM Cloudability live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of IBM Cloudability go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy IBM Cloudability again?

No

Apptio Cloudability is well suited when the mapping between cloud spend and applications or business services is well identified at the account level. This works well. In shared environments with mixed IaaS and PaaS allocations, Apptio Cloudability is not flexible enough. For us this was a K.O. criterion.

Using IBM Cloudability

We decided to build our home-grown FinOps tool.
Cloudability requires specific tool knowledge, but the learning curve is acceptable. We decided to build our own home-grown FinOps tool.
  • Cost by application
  • Allocation of transversal costs
  • Ability to use decimal allocation keys for Business Mappings
  • We decided to build our own home-grown FinOps tool.
  • With a possible future integration with IBM Turbonomic, to automate optimization insights.
We decided to build our own home-grown FinOps tool, but the results of the proof of concept were very promising.

Evaluating IBM Cloudability and Competitors

No - We decided to build our own home-grown FinOps tool.

We needed something that could handle the complexity of our cloud architecture. We decided to build our own home-grown FinOps tool.
By integrating Cloudability with IBM Apptio, we could leverage the latter's ability to handle complex allocation strategies.
