Overall Satisfaction with athenaClinicals

As part of a large multi-specialty healthcare network, we utilize many of the modules available within athenaNet. My experience as it relates to athenaClinicals specifically was to initially implement and standardize 36 different specialties (from the years of 2010 through 2013); I worked in conjunction with athena to build out content available for multiple specialties ranging from General Surgery to Pain Management. Once implemented, it was my responsibility to review content requests from our practices and implement as well as to optimize the providers' use of athenaClinicals. What I have always appreciated is the amount of data that you are able to get out of athena from their standard reports within the report library (you can also create your own) to the CareCheck metrics that athena provides which defines how well providers are using athenaClinicals. athenaClinicals also identifies areas that a provider may be struggling in; it helps you to be proactive in reaching out to those providers. The use of the Quality Managment (aka QM) tab is also very useful for satisfying quality programs as well as meeting Meaningful Use and PQRS. The workflow is seamless for quality management.

Currently, our employed group utilizes athenaClinicals within our organization and they are on one tablespace; this means that more than 400 providers are able to share patient charts which thus improves the coordination of quality care. It is quite helpful to have one shared chart since the patients may be seen by more than one provider and what is so great is that the pertinent clinical information is shared amongst the providers.
  • Quality programs - able to see what measures are outstanding for the patient
  • Reporting - able to report on multiple financial reports as well as clinical information
  • Standardization of clinical information - the system forces users within the same specialty to use the same templates (as a starting point), therefore it is easier to standardize protocols and treatments of care
  • Medication updates - when changing the dose of a medication, the medication list should automatically update
  • Multi-user conflict - when more than one user is in the chart at the same time, it is possible that information can be lost
  • Autosave feature - this feature is actually available in their new version which we hope to roll out later this year
  • Positive impact - standardization of workflows
  • Positive - shared chart, improved care coordination
  • Improved quality scores
eCW allows for customization on the provider level whereas athenaClinicals requires standardization by specialty. Meaningful Use and other quality programs are more challenging on eCW. eCW templates are quite different looking from those that are in athenaClinicals and the flow is a bit different (clicks in eCW versus scrolling in athenaClinicals).
Multi-specialty
More than 250 practitioners
athenaClinicals is well suited from a single physician office to an enterprise healthcare system. The only specialty that they cannot cover is oncology that includes chemotherapy infusions (the dosing is very complicated and requires a specific oncology system).
