Overall Satisfaction with Azure Data Lake Storage
We used Azure Data Lake Storage to provide our enterprise with a medium to ingest and build our data warehouse. We went with the Azure storage because of our existing Microsoft footprint as well as the cost of the solution. After our initial discovery, we found that the tool was very easy to implement and we've been on it for 2 generations.
Pros
- Ease of integration and setup
- Support for the MS Suite of Applications
- Extensible and upgradable
Cons
- Switch in Gen 1 to Gen 2 was a bit tricky.
- It can be performance bound if not properly architected.
- Need to be incremental in how you implement.
- Integration with our existing tool set.
- Support for our Microsoft foot print.
- Ease of implementation with our internal resources.
- We were able to turn the project around fast.
- We were able to diversify our data source.
- It allows incremental improvement over time.
We looked at the Amazon solution and it did not play as well with our existing tools and added a layer of maintenance that we were not willing to take on at the time. We thought that our Microsoft contract and support were good and that our internal team had the knowledge to support this over the long term vs outsourcing with Amazon Web Services.
