Overall Satisfaction with Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage

We use Backblaze B2 as the cloud backup target on our file storage NAS units. Its tight integration with the OEM backup application through AWS S3 service makes it a zero deployment cost and seamless solution to fulfill one peg of the 3-2-1 backup strategy. Backend infrastructure built on S3 gives us assurances in uptime reliability and geographical redundancy.

Pros

  • Tight integration with OEM backup application
  • Among the lowest price per TB cloud backup provider
  • AWS S3 service integration
  • Optional services for initial seeding of large backup data sets
  • Optional services for physical backup retrieval to speed up recovery

Cons

  • Web UI to access the backup files is clunky and slow
  • It would be great to have the ability to switch regions after account creation. They could charge a fee for the service and I would still pay to utilize the feature when necessary
  • Lifecycle retention features could be improved
  • Improved company's disaster recovery posture
  • Initial seed data backup took 10-25x less time than it would have taken with other backup services with only option to transfer over the internet
  • Reduced OPEX compare to other options, being the lowest $/TB cloud backup service on market
Backblaze B2 excels in the aspects of initial backup data seeding, integration with backup applications, and quick transfer speeds from geolocation advantages of AWS S3 service integrated into its infrastructure. I had to take a point off due to the web UI needing improvement to view, manage the backed up data.

Backblaze B2 is great as an alternate medium for a corporate backup strategy, especially as cold storage. Being one of the lowest cost offering on the market of cloud backup services makes it a compelling choice which all IT administrators should definitely consider among their choices. Service options provided for initial large data seeding (providing physical NAS units for fast network transfer of data) is amazing. It does fall short a bit on the web UI interface to view the backup data set. In a scenario where the backup set needs to be frequently retrieved, checked, I could see it becoming a frustration.
