Overall Satisfaction with Bitbucket

We use Bitbucket to store and track our engineering project codes, especially for projects that require collaboration between internal and external teams. Since this is a cloud-based solution, it is very easy for external collaborators on the projects to access the code stored in Bitbucket without having to go through firewalls and set up VPNs.

Pros

  • Deep integration with Trello/Jira and Confluence for issue tracking and documentation
  • Great pricing model for both small and enterprise-level companies (even with a free tier)

Cons

  • Some key important features require third-party add-ons, such as reporting and charts
  • Cannot archive repositories
  • Being part of the Atlassian Cloud suite saved us having to learn/train new tools
  • Integrates with many other applications we use, such as Slack
From a pure source code control solution for GitHub, both Bitbucket and GitHub are very similar. However, Trello/Jira, Confluence, and the rest of the Atlassian Cloud suite is more powerful and feature-rich than the equivalent of what GitHub offers. We ultimately went with Bitbucket.
Atlassian has great support, both free and paid. You can also get a lot of assistance and helpful tips from its community.

Do you think Atlassian Bitbucket delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Atlassian Bitbucket's feature set?

Yes

Did Atlassian Bitbucket live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Atlassian Bitbucket go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Atlassian Bitbucket again?

Yes

Overall, Bitbucket is a solid solution for both casual users that just want a place to host their private work and businesses that need a reliable cloud source control solution. With the entire Atlassian Cloud suite, you get Trello/Jira for issue tracking, Confluence for documentation, and its pipeline feature for CI/CD, so a one-stop shop for the whole development experience without having to look elsewhere. And if you need to have it hosted on-premises for some reason, it is also possible via their server offering (the entire suite).

However, if you are looking for a home for your new open-source project, then GitHub is definitely the way to go, as it has established itself as the go-to place for open source projects. It has been around longer, the community is bigger, and people (especially the open-source crowd) are more familiar with it.
